Fellow aviation newbs, what are you planning to do now that the game has changed? A year ago the standard path was to pay for primary training and than get beat up flying low time gigs for table scraps until you met mins. (unless you came from money or somehow justified a soul crushing loan and had no qualms about taking the zero to hero route)
As things change in the industry though it doesn't seem this method of entry is viable now. Low time gigs don't seem to exist anymore, jobs that used to be considered "low time" for a newly minted commercial pilot are very rare and when they do come up now require high hundreds or even 1000+ TT
So is paying out of pocket for the 1st 1000 hours the only option left for us newbs to get our foot in the door? I suppose I could do that but I'd 15 years away from retirment before I built up enough time to qualify for even the most basic entry level pilot jobs out there.
What are some of you planning to do to build up those first 1000 to 1500 hours? I've been looking around for ideas but even volunteering for a non profit requires you pay for the aircraft expenses out of pocket.
I have a background as an entrepreneur and am considering purchasing a trainer and free lancing after I finish my CFI but with credit dried up and a recession there are already a lot of independent CFI's out there struggling to feed their families. Thoughts?
