Caravan down outside Houston

What are they doing with the data?
States are using the adsb tracks to determine whether or not aircraft are "based" in their state for tax purposes. Doesn't matter how much time you think your airplane actually spends in a state, if they think it's long enough you get a bill in the mail.

You’re saying corporations/people have to pay the taxes they owe?

I'm totally for paying taxes we owe, but making an individual go back and submit proof to several states to their satisfaction that their aircraft isn't there so one doesn't have to pay them taxes they don't owe is absurd.
I’ve had to do it. You want to provide proof right away. I ignored the notice and a lien was attached to my aircraft, that was a pain to get removed.

The problem with this is the financial burden to owners. There are hundreds if not thousands of aircraft types out there that are exempt for one reason or another. Many of which due to their lack of an electrical system. Now you're talking about thousands of dollars in aircraft modifications, some of which are unique or one off that would require designing or engineering one-off ADS-B compliance.

People complain about the cost of avionics…go pull up some Flying magazines on Google Books from the 1960s, check out the ads and toss some of those numbers into the CPI calculator.

Hint: Avionics have always been wickedly expensive. You could legally put non-TSOed stuff in your airplanes and it was still expensive.

Skybeacon in particular is a bargain. With one of those, an iPad and a cheap ADSB receiver, you’ve got weather and real time traffic.

Even if you could use a commercial grade box you’d need external antennae of some kind and you won’t get that done cheaper than putting a skybeacon on.
