Capt making PA's only...

Capt making PA\'s only...

Is it true that at some airlines like American Airlines and Eagle, that only the captain is allowed to make the PA's, such as the 'prepare for takeoff' speech???
Is there any reason behind this?

Re: Capt making PA\'s only...

I have never heard of that - and when I was in the jumpseat on VS, the relief pilot was the one who made the annoucement during taxi - the pilots had their hands full with the airplane.

That is absolutly not true. At AA & Eagle both pilots make PAs.

Re: Capt making PA\'s only...

At Continental, either pilot can make PAs. In fact, sometimes the intern in the jumpseat made the PA! When I was jumpseating during my internship, I had several captains let me make PA announcements and a handful that let me make radio calls as well.

I heard stories about interns doing more than that (no Monica jokes, folks, nothing like that!) but that was just urban legend I should think.

One of my friends from WMU had a friend intern for a regional. The captain let him sit in the left seat at altitude - obviously against regs. The first officer didn't like it one bit and told management...the captain lost his job.

I believe my friend, but has anyone else heard of this?

Re: Capt making PA\'s only...

I flew an ATR. (a few times.....)

This was done with the concurrance of all crew members, at altitude, and on ferry flights with no pax on board.

There are stories of old Simmons guys letting FAs land the SD 360s (again, ferry/repo flights) but I never took it that far!

Re: Capt making PA\'s only...

I like it when the captains let the FO do the PAs and seatbelt sign, you know I practiced it for 4 years flying freight, and everyone thought I was nuts, but it pays off!!! You won't get any "uhhhh uhhhhh"s out of me!!!

Seriously though, my thoughts on it are the pilot flying should be the one doing the PAs and seatbelt sign, except for maybe the initial at-the-gate-still-welcome-aboard PA (which I have done as FO though) and maybe if there is something really strange or whatever going on where the captain feels that a "captain" PA would be a good idea.

Re: Capt making PA\'s only...

At our company, sometimes the Captain will make a "welcome aboard" PA, then sometimes they'll ask me to if they're busy. Before takeoff, I make a departure announcement for the F/A, and in cruise whoever is the PNF will make the seat belt announcement.

Re: Capt making PA\'s only...

The Flight Attendants have a script to read from (many memorize it after a few weeks), however the pilots do not.
