i met with a bunch of old friends in Johannesburg , some of them went to Oxford (UK) and others to ENAC in toulouse france , i was the only one who chose to come here to the United states and persue the dream :) .
with plenty of time in hands , and believe me its a weird phenomenon , the clock barely moves there, you do a lot of things and it is not even 10 AM !!
we decided to take a couple of planes ,C172's ( i had to couple with one of My JAA buddies and fly illegaly from the right seat for the 1st time weiiiird ) and go for a looooooong ride , Johannesburg to Cape town and back ,1800 NM's , we did it in 20 hours with one night stop leaving and two night stops coming back to JB
very intense moments ! here are some pics

Over JHB

this was our first stop after 3 and 1/2 hours of flying to the south of JHB . In the middle of nowhere , 4 C 172's
we were 9 guys in total , 4 crews and one Pax

Approaching Beaufort West

on final 08 to beaufort west , its a non paved runwway

at beaufort west , we were waiting for our turn to refuel , whats interesting is that this terrain is maintained by a lodge dedicated to cross country pilots , the lodge is owned by a very sympathetic couple

approaching cape town , to be honest , the level of concentration was high , and it was a the first time for every single one of us.
Cape Town was hidden behind the Hedelbergh mountain, and we had to make our way between the peaks , (MORA FL 094) the thing is that we had to stay under class B airspace ( Cape Town Intl) bellow 8500 FT

What an awesome, incredible trip! Thanks for the pictures.

I visited South Africa last summer for the first time. Flew into Johannesburg, but spent most of the time around Kruger National Park, in Fitchburg, and some time in Lesotho. Never made it to Cape Town.

The only general aviation I saw was a Light Sport twin giving rides over the Park from Hazyview.

I guess I wasn't expecting mountain ranges--mostly flat plains. Boy, was I wrong! There are serious mountains in South Africa! The landscape reminded me of Utah or Wyoming.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the adventure.

What an adventure! I think Cape Town is the most scenic destination on the planet (that I've been to anyways..)! I'd love to have experienced it in a Cessna....

Thank you guys very much for the your comments , it was indeed an incredible trip and one to remember , south africa has a mix of beautiful landscapes and scenery , from deserts to mountains to gorgeous beaches

The planes were rented from FTS its a flight school based out of grand central Airport in midrand Gauteng
the rates are pretty much the same as the US
a 172 goes for 950 Rands which is around 150 Us $ DRY.
The worse part of all this is that i didnt log any of the hours we flew ,but i got some experience out of it !
