CAP Question

im pretty sure it just depends on the type of mission they're flying.

if its a search flight, obviously VFR

but if they're going somewhere or some other sorta mission, probably IFR

Both, actually.

Search & Rescue, Cadet Orientation, Counter Drug, Photo Recon, etc. are obviously VFR only. Transport Missions and aircraft repositioning can be done IFR. However, to do an IFR flight on a CAP mission, one needs more than the Instrument rating. I can't remember all of the hopes one has to jump through, but it at least involves a checkride with a CAP Instructor Pilot.

In addition to being FAA current, you have to initially gain IFR priviledges (and re-up them each year) during your Form-5 checkride. All F-5s are done with CAP Check Pilots. Not a huge deal by any means, but there are hoops.
