Canon Cameras

I can't wait to learn to use the freakin thing.. :)

I got it to take photo's of my review aircraft. I'm a writer for a e-zine and needed it..

I really want to learn to take pictures of lighining..

I haven't had the opportunity to use many A series, but I'm a big fan of the SD series. My brother has an SD550 and my friend has one of the new SD1000's. Great little camera.

I personally have a 350D (aka Digital Rebel XT). It's an awesome camera, but bulky to carry in a flight bag, especially if you have all the lenses and stuff. Plus they require a little more manual know-how than the SD's (which I don't have enough of :( )

I was looking for some advice on cameras:

First, I would like to mention most of my pictures are going to be from the flight deck and on non-rev trips, vacation type pics. Also, I would like to have the ability to take good pictures at night.

Right now, I am looking at the canon A630, A640, SD450. Anybody have a recomendation and what kinda stuff should I be looking at? I am already mentally prepared to have to buy a larger memory card, just shy of the 1gb range.

I wandered in to Target tonight and they have the Panasonic DMC-LX7 I bought a few weeks ago for $179 on sale for $159. (Note: First cardinal rule of purchasing technology: Once you buy something, never look back.).

I am a Canon SLR guy, but Panasonic makes excellent digital point-and-shoots, too. I chose this for the following features:
-7.2Megapixel
-6x optical zoom
-optical image stabilization
-all features, menus and settings can be worked with your right hand, freeing your left for flying
-19 preset scene modes including "Aerial Photo" which has the following warning every time you select it: "Turn off the camera during takeoff and landing. Follow the instructions of cabin attendant."

I haven't really tried to take too many night pictures with it, but haven't had much luck. I've never had a camera that would do well at night, so I hardly bother anymore. That is to say, in flight at night. Otherwise, I'm really impressed with this camera.

Check any camera you are interested in per the very detailed reviews at www.dpreview.com They have a lot of great information.

Also, a few weeks ago, Radio Shack had a three pack of PNY 1GB SD cards on sale for $29.

Canons rock! My next DSLR will be the EOS-1Ds Mark III. Well, I wish anyway. Good luck

ya know....we have an SD600 (Canon) and i'm not all that fond of it.. to me, it seems like the pictures are awful grainy on a zoomed image....to me, it seems stupid to have a camera that you can't zoom because of "grain levels"...any way to fix that or do i just need a better camera?

Grainy zoom is because of the digital zoom. That is why the 6x optical zoom is such an excellent feature on the Panasonic I mentioned. If you have any optical zoom at all, go into the menus and turn off the digital zoom. Anything the digital zoom can do, you can do better later by cropping the photo and resizing on your computer. That's all the digital zoom does. Even without an optical zoom, you are better off not using the digital zoom.

Do you guys recommend the SD1000? I am shopping around for cameras but dont know which. Which one has good shots at night where it is not that noisy? I just wanted a pocket camera

I just bought an SD1000 and I'm happy with it thus far. I have an older Canon G2 and it's just too big and clunky to carry around. The SD1000 is great....it fits in a pocket very nicely. The battery life is great. So, in my opinion, for the price (can easily get them for less than $200), tough to beat it.

My main camera is a Canon 20D (I really want a 40D but can't get it in the budget) and it is definitely too big to carry around in the flight bag. I did some research and bought a Canon SD800 to carry around, the main reason being that the zoom lens on the wide end comes out to a 28mm equivalent focal length. In English that means that it's a decently wide angle lens. I haven't done a lot with it yet, only enough to know that it sucks compared to my DSLR, but what do you expect? Anyways, I picked it up at Costco w/ a 2GB card for $315.

Check out the link below for some of my work. All images on that site were taken with my DSLR.

I've had a Canon Digital Rebel for about 3 years and change. You can change the lenses out. (If you can afford a different one.) You can use it like an old 35 MM camera where you make all the adjustments OR you can let it do the work for you. Takes excellent pictures. I think you can pick them up for around $600 these days. (BTW it is the only really nice electronic thing I have.) A little big to lug around with me on my all my trips, but overall I am very, very happy with it. Great camera.

I had a Canon D30 Digital SLR camera with two lenses back during my photography phase. It was a fantastic camera, and I just know it would take BEAUTIFUL cockpit photos... if you could fit the entire thing in your bag. That's the only downside, besides price, of course. Otherwise their use and versatility is endless. And the Canon D40 just came out! Man... if I had the money and it wasn't all being blown on time-building!

Even though it's relatively tweeked (post-processed with imaging programs) here's a shot of SBA on a cloudy day:

And more of some puffy mini cumulus clouds over santa barbara:

And flying over catalina:

And finally, three planes at the Catalina airport (we arrived in the Piper):

Oh man I just picked up a 40D...my god what a sweet piece of equipment!

I can't wait to start really shooting it!

The SD1000 is a great camera - the wife and I picked it up earlier this year before our wedding to have a nice general "point and shoot" pocket camera.

It takes great pics and has a huge screen for viewing them. It's a little pricy right now, but I totally recommend it because for the size of the lens/chip a 7.1 megapixel camera is a bit of overkill. (i.e. the lens can't get the detail that the pixels are recording) It'll last you for a long time.

The only thing that sucks is the battery - it's a canon specific one, so buy 2. A 2 gig SD card will hold about 1000 pics also so you can leave pics on the card for a bit without downloading them if you are on a long trip.
