This isn't meant as a bash on you JayB but ... that has got to be one of the most ignorant and moronic mis-truths in the entire aviation world and I really hate that it continues to persist.

The only time a multi-engine aircraft is inherently more "dangerous" than a single engine aircraft is when an engine fails immediately after takeoff – in the gray zone of 50ft AGL to about 500ft AGL) and then it's only such if the pilot isn't prepared or proficient. An engine failure at any other point in the flight is really, almost, a non-event.

What kills people or what "takes them to the scene of the accident first" is a non-proficient pilot. Someone who is proficient at flying twins greatly, greatly reduces the "danger" of a twin.

Answer me this ... what happens in a single when the engine dies? Yup, that's right, You are SOL. Now answer me this one? How many times have you had an engine quit on a single? Not too often. So why, then, does everyone assume that if you slap a second engine on an aircraft it's somehow magically transformed into a POS-timebomb just waiting to ruin your day?

We look for redundancy in every system on an aircraft: dual vac pumps are better than a single pump, dual radios (some of us carry transceviers because we're so paranoid about it), dual alternators, back up gear extension systems yet when we start talking about a second engine all of a sudden it's bad juju.

It just irks me because the people who generally espouse that stupid sayng are single-engine pilots who know very little about multi-engine operations.

I think the saying "the spare engine will only take you to the scene of an accident" is merely a play on words describing the days of training in the Seminole's in Flagstaff, AZ during the middle of summer, where the hot and high conditions of temp/density altitude only allowed a negative climb value, zero if you were lucky, following loss of an engine. It's not that any twin is just going to up and explode following losing one engine, it's just that the remaining engine will only take you so far in these conditions.....albeit a little farther than a single-engine plane that's now a glider. I don't think he was knocking the twin planes or the pilot abilities.

However, what happens with a single engine aircraft that takes off into IMC and loses an engine? That pilot has far less options than does the multi-engine pilot. Worst-case scenario in the twin is that the airplane is treated like a single and is landed straight ahead. As long as the pilot doesn't ask the airplane to do something it can't his chances of loss of directional control (Vmc is just an arbitrary airspeed and not an "action") are essentially eliminated. A proficient multi-pilot will know the density altitude and what his options are before he ever takes the runway.

The real question here is the wisdom in doing a zero-zero (or otherwise below minimums) takeoff in any airplane under part 91 without assessing the risks and having an out of some kind (which would generally be don't do it in th efirst place).

That's my point. It does happen but not very often. So why, then, does everyone automatically "up the chances" when a second engine is slapped on an airframe?

I do agree that those who believe the engine will never die are asking for trouble. Everytime I take off I'm a little surprised that one of the engine didn't quit.

However, I don't believe that the engines are just waiting to fall off I keep that mindset so as to be ready if one does happen to quit. There is a difference.

I noticed you skipped my redundancy argument. So I'll ask again ... why is systems redeundancy in every other facet of aviation "ok" or "desirable" but when it comes to engines it's some mysterious, bad juju?

As far as statistics go ... accident statistics only show accidents. They do not report the "close calls" and "near misses" that the second engine got people out of. Statistics also are skewed in that up until only 15 years or so ago pilots were not required to demonstrate IFR proficency in multi engine aircraft. Meaning if someone had gone out and got a private single, multi ticket andthen got an IA rating in the single he was "technically" allowed to excercise those priviliges in a twin. After several people killed themselves the FAA changed the rules to the way they are today.

And, your point only illustrates that it's pilot proficency not a second engine that kills folks.

Second, I'm glad that you got through your MEI ride in such a workload intensive aircraft. One might argue the wisdom of doing such a stressful test in such a high-workload aircraft but I won't.

Third, no where have I ever said that I take flying a multi-engine aircraft lightly. All flying should be taken seriously and multi-engine flying presents it's own unique set of challenges but – with the exception of one specific phase – they are no more inherently dangerous than the risks represented in single engine flying – assuming the pilot is proficient.

Any airplane will kill you.

As far as knowing high-time pilots,well, I'm happy you have a knowledgable source to talk to – that's great. And as far as multi-time goes I have a few hours, here and there, in a twin ...

You're probably right ... but all too often I hear the same "saying" being used – mainly by weekend warrior "pilots" i.e. Doctors, Lawyers, etc. – to say "the only purpose of the second engine is to take you to the scene of the accident faster." That was the "attitude" I was ranting against ... not JayB.

Not at all, I totally understand that you were just ranting at the comment, but I felt that I had to make it clear that I did not hear the phrase from some low-time multi-engine pilot. The fact that it came from a high time, well experienced pilot makes me respect it. I think the point of the phrase was stated well above.

Actually, it wasn't that stressful given that I'd trained in the same high workload twin, and although I share your concerns (in certain situations, with certain people) with training in an aircraft with a high learning curve, I believe that it has made me a better pilot because it has been a heck of a lot easier to transition to other aircraft.

I hope that you don't take this little discussion as an argument, it was not intended to be that way. Everyone has made a valid point that I didn't consider before in school: is a single engine pilot illegal if he takes off?
