Can you legally fly VFR with an expired GPS database?

The GPS in the Cessna 172 is certified for VFR only and the GPS database has expired. Is the airplane legal to fly in VFR? How about IFR?

Thanks for your help!

Jeremy

just VFR.....VFR use of GPS is for situational awareness only so it does not really matter too much of the satabase is expired.

Of course you can fly VFR legaly. A majority of people/flight schools do. IFR, no, not if it's not current.

You can use it for enroute IFR if you verify that the location of every waypoint you use is correct. Don't ask me how to do that.

Direct, two waypoints, your departure and your arrival airports.

Who told you that? Are you saying that I can't use GPS as my primary means of navigation during VFR flight? If so, why not?

PREACH IT!!!

The only airplanes at my FBO that even HAVE GPS are the new C172SP's and I can't afford `em.

NO GPS for this pilot. Don't even know how to use one properly. Couldn't load an apprach to save my life. After loading ABC to XYZ, I'm boggled.

OLD SCHOOL for me!!!

See, I try to avoid that at all costs!!! I can do it, but I hate it!!!

Give me an ADF, a VOR and a stopwatch, and I'll go anywhere!!!!

I took my IR checkride in an SP w/o an ADF BECAUSE GPS is the epitomy of laziness.
smile.gif
Then the DE didn't even make me do a GPS approach......

Oh, I got to use the ADF well on my Instrument ride!!

Now, the CFII ride? 1973 172, VOR and 430!!! Yeah, baby!!! Even the NDB approach was fun!!!

We can play "Back in the good old days" all we want, but GPS is the technology of the future!! I've had more VOR and NDB failures than GPS failures!!!

VORs for me everytime. I use NDBs as a backup to verify my postion, and use GPS for situational awareness.

I lost it years ago mate !

Could be worse. He could be using NDBs as his first choice of approaches. THAT would be certifiably insane.

Sorry about the confusion.....it came out wrong.Unlike IFR where you are required to use either NDB's or VOR's (usually) as your primary means of navigation, VFR flying has no real requirement to use anything inparticular. So by all means go ahead and use GPS

So how about if I wanted to be an uberdork and go tooling along, night VFR, in my Cherokee with a pair of night-vision goggles? I challenge you all to find any regs or opinions about this!

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.other than than the cool new infrared camera on Gulfstreams.

Hey, I'm just saying what I'm saying becauase all of our FBO plane ARE from "back in the good old days."

The ones that I can afford, that is.

I'm considering doing my CFII in the SP so that I can learn how to do a GPS approach, but in so doing, I'd not have to do an ADF approach and since I'll be teaching more of those than I will GPS....... you see where my delimma is.
