Can this be legally done?

Lets say I buy a ELITE PI-135 Basic ATD (it's FAA approaved for Instrument currency) can I rent it out hourly? Is it legal to do if you're not a CFII yet? This will be setup for pilots that don't want to go through the hassles of going to the airport, renting an airplane and spending a bunch of $.

Thanks in advance.

Ummm...without a CFII, who's going to give the instruction? You can't just jump on a PCATD, fly an approach and then log it....

you need insurance which will be insnae

It isn't a plane, so the insurance is a mute point.

yeah I hear insurance for them FTDs are outrageous!

I see what you're saying but to stay current you don't need a CFI. You would only need one for an IPC and that's after you passed the 6th month without doing your holds, radial tracking and instrument appraches. If I'm IFR rated and I'm nearing that magical 6th month I can just go rent an airplane for a couple of hours and complete the things that I need to stay current. Right? As long as I have a safety pilot with me if it's in VMC. With a FAA approved PCATD you skip all that, or am I missing something?

Advisory Circular 61-126 won\'t allow this

Excerpt from AC61-126:

"PCATD's determined to meet the criteria established by this AC may be
used in lieu of, and for not more than, 10 hours of time that ordinarily may be acquired in a flight simulator
or flight training device authorized for use under part 61 or part 141. However, the FAA has not
authorized the use of PCATD's for conducting practical tests nor for accomplishing recency of experience
requirements."

Sorry....

Re: Advisory Circular 61-126 won\'t allow this

Not to mention that time on a flight training device or sim can't be logged period, unless its signed by a CFII or IGI.

Re: Advisory Circular 61-126 won\'t allow this

There is one PCATD (the Elite G500 I think) that is certified for currency. I got that off the FAA's website somewhere. You can use FTDs for currency training (Frasca's, etc), but not PCATDs. Not sure what the overall difference is other than software.
