Can airlines do this?

Hi,

I was curious if airlines did fare sponsorships? I am trying to go to South Africa so that I can work on an organic orchard to supply food to the poor and homeless population of South Africa. However right now I can not afford the plane ticket. Are there any airlines that will sponsor air travel for college students who are going to volunteer for humanitarian aid to countries in need?

Thanks,
Jerome

Only if there was a airline that would sponsor me to travel the world drinking heavily and chasing skirts...

Heh. Well probably not if they've read your previous posts. Organic produce for the poor! That's a good one, can I use that?

haha, Really, WWOOF = World Wide Opportunities for organic farms. I was also thinking about flying on the side. This would be how I got there. While I was there I would hope to build time!

You could do something to help feed the poor and homeless right here in the US, probably right in your own community...then you wouldn't have to worry about airfare.

I have worked in the US with the American Red Cross when I was in high school. I would like to help people who are more less fortunate than Americans.

You could run out on the ramp on a dark night and find some airplane flying out there and hide in the landing gear...

A couple of months ago I was chatting with my wife's Grandfather and he was jabbering on and on about how when he was young - in the 30's and early 40's that he was 'one of the first organic farmers.' He told me all of the things that they used to do to - helping out other local farmers, composting materials, no pesticides, and etc. After he told his story, I said, "I'm sure that you did all of those things, and it's great that you did, but no, you weren't an 'organic farmer' there were no 'organic farmers' back then, what you were was a POOR farmer."

Anyhoo... we have 10% unemployment here in America. People are tired of the 'economic downturn' and peoples lives are sinking fast. I see homeless people all of the time in ORD and LAX. I see suffering people everywhere I go. In fact, I'm going to be losing my job and have no prospects after that other than going on the dole and starting to pound the pavement for work. People are suffering here in America. Volunteer here first - I don't know why people think that everything is covered in gold and roses here in the USA, it isn't - people need help everywhere. Oh, and if there's a great opportunity, say teaching blind kids to put batteries in hearing-aids in Watts, let us know, maybe someone here can get you a buddy pass.

The reality is there are companies making large sums of money organizing charity trips to places like Africa - no one, airline, charity, etc will fund your way. Start saving.....

I think that it is great that you would give time from your life for such a cause. Thank you.

As far as the airlines are concerned, unless it will make the news and generate a ton of publicity for them, then unfortunately they could not care less.

I cannot speak for the airlines. My guess is they would NOT. That goes for the charities as well. They dont have any money to give away. I went to Honduras almost two years ago now. We a team of 17 people go. It was up to us to raise our own money. That will be your best bet. Create a letter explaining your "mission", and send it to everyone one you know asking for their assistance. Good luck with it.
