Camarillo Controllers

I too must praise the CMA controllers. Some of the most fun controllers i have ever worked with. I would highly recommend going up to the tower and meeting them. They are good people.

Right on their tale though, the point mugu controllers are awesome as well.

We've been having pretty good luck with socal accommodating us at all altitudes off the arrival and departure ends of lax. I'd love to hear the takeoff clearance... "SWA, cleared for takeoff, climb and maintain 2000, traffic 12 o'clock 5 miles 4 cessna 172s 2500, 3000, 5500, 7000, circling."

Its kinda cool, but is that the best place to be out "circling" or doing maneuvers? haha

right on.. it sounded like you were taking students out there or something!

btw, I landed an Aviat Husky at LAX just for s and giggles one time. It was fun, but annoying for the controllers. I was actually being worked by the "helicopter tower" due to being so slow haha

If you use the mini route (one of the vfr transitions) they put you with lax heli as well. smo 20.1 -> lax heli 19.1-> hhr 21.1 tower or opposite northbound. The landing fee at lax is ridiculous iirc. Then the stupid expensive handling fee at the fbo, and it's just not worth it to go in there.

no landing fee. just a ramp fee, which Atlantic waived since all the line guys were just so excited to see a little fabric taildragger lol

I'll see your CMA controllers and raise you LGB (-1 prick). I'm convinced we have the best of the best here!

Last time I was at LGB I think I got this guy every time. Snapped at the Jet Blue guy behind me because he asked for my location. Then on the way out snapped at me for filing direct and trashed my flight plan after 1 hour and 5 minutes. Had to spend 20 minutes ground filing with FSS. I thought I had up to 1:30 in past experiences anyway.

CMA tower does rock as well as OXR. Very professional. I would be interested in a tour the next time I get downtime there.

Flight plans should be active from 1/2 hr prior to proposed time to 2 hrs past proposed time, longer sometimes if there are significant delays in in the region.

I'm just impressed with how well they deal with weekend warriors. Always fun to hear some guy on downwind mucking up the works by turning base early, and totally not comprehending instructions, which leads the controller to say "TURN RIGHT, BACK TO THE DOWNWIND, NOW!"

Same can be said about SAF controllers. We had one guy in a DA-40 freaking out about the and I quote "Scary noises" his TIS was making and the contoller was calm and assured him there was no other traffic in the pattern. Personally, I would have probably laughed at him. Use your eyes people, TIS/TCAS are meant to help you out with your scan, not replace it.
