Call from India

Has anyone received a phone calls from India inquiring about commercial aviation and training? I received a call last night, the answering machine picked up and it's a man from India with a real thick accent. I had a hard time understanding him, but it sounded like he was asking about commercial flight training.

Anyone ever had this happen? What course of action should i take? And most importantly, where did they get my unlisted phone number?

Do you run a flight school?

There is a HUGE shortage of pilots in India now, and it's only going to get worse.. so it's not unusual to expect that a lot of Indians with family money will be making their way to the great training grounds of the US to get training.

I'm looking for a 1st Class Med Doc that's close to where I live (far north Phoenix, past Jomax).. where abouts is your office? and do you know anything about the Delta Airlines pre-employment medical and how I can study for it? ;) I've already got the Cholest Off from Costco! :D

btw... India's call centers are creating this huge boom in a "middle class" as they're paying people about $1000/month or about 10x the average wage.
 
There is a HUGE shortage of pilots in India. There are so many airlines, all competing for a few pilots. They get treated very well, even get picked up personally at home to go to the airport.

I think to resolve the crisis, the military has grudgingly agreed to reduce the manditory term for its pilots so that they can go civilian sooner. That's still not nearly enough.
 
I tipped our tour guide $300 once. He had spent the day taking us from Delhi to Agra to see the Taj and other places. After the whole crew chipped in, we had tipped him something like $1500. He started crying.
 
There is a guy in India that drives around villages and cities rounding people up to become pilots. He charges them out the ass to "find" flight schools in America, and to give them a crappy ground school. You may have been contacted by one of these guys.
 
Just like in the US, $1500 would be worth lots of Nike shoes and drugs. :sarcasm:

It depends on where you live. In big cities, you'll spend that pretty quickly. In villages, its a LOT.

Just taking food for example, you can spend either 150 rupees at a fancy coffee shop or 3 rupees at a small hole in the wall place. You can spend 2000 rupees on dinner or totally fill your stomach for 10 rupees. It just depends.

I can tell you though that real estate is very expensive, gas is very expensive and hotels are expensive.

I worked in India for quite some time back in 2002.

My driver made 700 Rupees per month, and his job was (or still is) considered respectable and decent pay.

He supported his wife and 2 kids on that salary.

He was such a good guy I would give him an extra 1000 Rupees every month.

So if that guy was living in a small town or village, that would pretty much make him set for the year?
