My Flight Surgeon

Sr. Aviation Medical Examiner
The FAA has new criteria to allow the AME to issue a medical certificate when the airman has arthritis without going through the Special Issuance process. Applicants for first- or second- class must provide this information annually; applicants for third-class must provide the information with each required exam. Without this documentation, the AME cannot issue the medical certificate and must defer the certification decision to the FAA.

Status report from treating physician that includes the type of headache and a statement the treating physician finds the condition stable on current regimen for at least 2 weeks and no changes recommended. The frequency of the headaches must be noted. A statement whether or not there have been no in-patient hospitalizations nor more than 2 outpatient visits for exacerbations (with full recovery from symptoms) within the past year. Any preventive and/or abortive medications must be documented.
