A C-5M Super Galaxy transport aircraft landed at Travis Air Force Base in California with its nose landing gear up Thursday evening.
None of the 11 reservist aircrew, who are members of the 349th Air Mobility Wing, were injured, base officials said in a Friday release. Spokeswoman Capt. Lyndsey Horn said that initial reports indicated the crew experienced hydraulics issues while trying to lower the landing gear, which caused them to have to conduct the emergency landing at about 7:45 p.m. local time. Emergency personnel immediately responded.

AF times article here.

Well, Travis is probably nicer than Dover this time of year.;) But you're right...they do tend to break more often in more exotic locations

I can’t recall a single cargo or tanker aircraft that departed on schedule from Tyndall. Every single one broke at least long enough to give them an extra 3 days of mission-free time.

Worked with a C5 crew chief who went Warrant that explained how they always manage to end up broken in Rota or some other place...

They have 2 minimum equipment lists. A long sheet of stuff for non combat areas and a very abbreviated “just get it off the ground” Combat MEL. So when they are sitting in Afghanistan loading cargo they already know they only make their first stop which is at worst Shannon Ireland.

Either way whatever is broken will need parts sent to it to fix, so they go with where the best hotel is.

Still for anybody who has to use one to accomplish something this will always be your opinion of C5s

Many a times my old man (C5 A/C) would call home saying they “broke down” at Hickam. Rough life, I tell ya.

I was surprised that the one hit in the #4 by the SA-7/14 departing Baghdad in Jan 04, actually returned to land there. I figured they wouldve at least gone to Kuwait, rather than spend the next few months as a mortar magnet on the Baghdad ramp. But, it gave me an assigned mission the day they decided to fly it out, flying top cover for it with my wingman, even though our whole mission was rather worthless anyway.

I always like how we brief some sort of “preventative tactics” for what we all know is at best Vengeance Fires.

So they get it fixed there after many weeks of sitting there being a mortar magnet, couple of months, and I get tasked to lead a 2-ship out of Kirkuk to Baghdad in order to "cover" it as it takes off from Baghdad Intl and finally gets out of there and to Germany. Briefing went something like this:

Me: "So....what are my wingman and I supposed to be doing?"

Intel O-5 REMF: "You'll be covering the C-5 and protecting it as it takes off from Baghdad."

Me: "How am I going to do that?"

Intel REMF: "Well, you need to protect it if it comes under any AAA or MANPAD fire."

Me: "Ok, well, since the whole area surrounding the airport is urban, do I have weapons-free clearance to fire at will into the city if I see anti aircraft fire coming from somewhere? Because lets face it, if someone pops off a MANPAD, I won't have time to say "Hey!" over the radio before the C-5 is hit again, and besides, what the hell is the C-5 going to do anyway? Jink? And too, you have us loaded with Mk-82s and 30mm.....am I cleared to expend into where I see the shot came from? Since there likely won't be a C-5 I'll need to be flying cover for anymore...."

Intel REMF: "Uhh, well no, you have to get cleared to return fire, you can't just expend ordnance into the city."

Me: "So.....what's my mission again and how am I supposed to effectively cover the C-5, besides be witness to it getting shot down?"

Intel REMF: "Just go out there and fly the goddamn mission!"
