C-17 lands at Peter O'Night instead of MacDill

Isn't there also a note if you fly into SEATAC that states that aircrews should verify the runway is in fact the runway, and not the taxiway that looks exactly like the runway... width, length, etc... all the same.... just one has a solid yellow line, and one has a dashed white lol...

A lot of airports with parallel runways with a full length parallel taxiway will have notes such as yours in the remarks section of the A/FD. I remember not too long ago, a Continental 757 landed on one of the parallel taxiways at Newark.

Oh, and off topic, but I love your sig. :)

Southwest and American have landed on 32 at MQY before. Its is exactly 10 miles away from BNA and in line with runway 31. Both a roughly the same length too, MQY at just over 8000 and 31 in BNA at 10k, oh and they both have a crossing runway that are the exact same angle... It can definitely happen.

We were running way late one night heading to BNA. I tell approach field is in sight without skipping a beat he comes back with you are looking at MQY you can land there if you want but I wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah, true. Hey, BTW.... the MetLife blimp is currently at my home airport, KDPA. :-) . I dunno if you fly it or not, but your avatar just reminded me of it. It's been here for 4 days now...

We actually operate two airships for MetLife, "Snoopy-1" and "Snoopy-2". You saw Snoopy-2, and they actually left for Indianapolis today. KSCessnaDriver is currently over on that operation right now.

Snoopy-1 (where I am) is currently in New Jersey.

Anyone get the tapes yet from TPA approach? They should have been with them until a 4 mile final or so.

macdill is a weird one, the visual has heavy jets coming in over st Pete, barely above the pattern at whitted (in it for turbines), and then landing the second peninsula - the third being Peter 'O. Bet they wish they asked for the TACAN!

They landed in Brussels instead of Frankfurt, I dunno what they were smoking becasue the two cities are more then 200 NM apart...
Maybe they were so out of it and sleepy they forgot the destination and just headed towards BRU, wouldn't their squak say otherwise to ATC tho? I gotta read up on that.

My understanding was that they could take the cargo, but not enough fuel to go anywhere. I guess they worked out a plan where they could stop for fuel.

They had just started using the C-17 the last year I was at HMX-1. I was on the first international flight that returned to Quanitico instead of Andrews. We flew in from Guam to Virginia.
You are probably right on the fuel load I don't ever remember issuing an international clearance. I think maybe KTCM was the furthest out and I don't know if that was a loaded flight or not, probably RTB.

Yeah when I read that I heard Paul Harvey's voice saying "with The Rest of the Story".

Didn't Northwest land one at Ellsworth instead of Rapid City awhile back. All those B1's...just sitting there...then A LONG time ago Delta (IIRC) landed at Frankfort, KY instead of Lexington.

I've been flying into Rapid City a lot recently and every time Ellsworth approach points out both airports, even if I tell them I have Rapid City in sight. Like in this incident, the airports are close together and have a similar runway orientation.

So, a C-17 friend of mine said that there were actually 4 pilots aboard this flight assigned to the mission. There was a crew of 19 because there was a DV (VIP for you non-military types) who happened to be a CENTCOM 4-Star.

Pro tip: dial in the approach for the airport/runway you intend to land.

I've done exactly that, then still managed to line up with the wrong runway. Fly into enough unfamiliar airports, add in a few timezone crossings and irregular sleep schedules, it happens. Your mind gets locked on to the idea that what you're seeing is correct. Hell, it's occurred to crews who are extremely familiar with the airport. CAL 757 on 29R in EWR, DAL 767 in ATL on taxiway M.

Some even Paint "TAXI" on them in nice yellow paint. BOS comes to mind

Was it the guy with the RIDICULOUS low voice? "I command you to land" is what I wanted him to say SO bad! :D

That means they essentially had 2 Airstream campers, welded together, that the 4-Star hung out in. That thing has been around for a LONG time. We called it the Silver Bullet and I was on several missions to South Korea (Kunsan I believe) back in the 90s doing the same exact thing. Sometimes we went to DC and others MacDill. Most of the time it was a double AR to the West Coast, quick refuel, and on to destination. Yeah that is a LONG mission. I am guessing the aircrew was 4 pilots, 2 loads, and a few Mx personnel because Barney breaks like Fred. There was always a TON of support peeps for the bullet on board -From techs to waiters.

The inside is badass! We used to sit in it on the empty legs and watch movies. Back in the 90s, it had the coolest home theater I had ever seen. I remember being so enthralled in watching Apocalypse Now, that I did my pre-landing walkaround and ran back inside to keep watching the movie. Just as we touched down, the first BOOM of the beach scene went off. It was awesome!

The two that always baffled me were the NWA and Mesaba flights that almost landed at Grand Forks AFB. Yes, the airport next to the TINY town, with the double flashing white light that you can see from a million miles away is what you want, not the one next to the "big city" that's barely visible. :D Bah, whatever. I don't judge! I've done some real humdingers in my time. :p

All these examples in this thread just go to show that ALL of us are a teeny weeny mistake away from making a big boo boo. We just need the right buttons pushed.

My C-17 buddy did a big trip recently carrying that thing around, and he said another perk was that the Air Force "flight attendants" made some amazing food. Two weeks on the road eating gourmet everyday.
