Buying your own medical insurance?

I'm actually incredibly glad I pay for dental. I'm going through a round of dental work right now, and I'm paying roughly 1/8th the actual "market" cost of the work. The insurance company also contracting with the provider at lowered rates helps, too.

I tell my dentist and doctors I want to pay cash and pay his insurance rate.

Fair enough, but the insurance rate would still cost over $2,500 for all I need done. My $6/paycheck dental insurance is only requiring me to pay ~$500 for it.

That's about the spread between insurance reimbursement and "street price". Many providers will give you the insurance reimbursement rate if you wave cash.

I still guarantee that I pay less. :)

Real numbers for a root planing I just had done (as fun as it sounds):

Market price: $1,164
Insurance price: $480
Total out of pocket (for me): $170.40

That didn't include my exam prior to that, and x-rays that were done. That was 100% covered by insurance.
