Sniping is the only way to go. Placing any bid prior to the last 5 seconds of the auction is not smart.

My first ANR headset came from ebay (Bose X). I purposely bought the heli version with the coiled cord at a discount compared to a regular GA plug. I purchased an adapter and have never had a problem with the heli to GA plug. Great headset and excellent ebay experience.

As has been mentioned previously, make sure you get the exact model you want (type of mic, type of plug, type of cord) before committing.

Sure. By placing a bid several hours or even days in advance you give other potential bidders time to chip away at your proxy bid. Then when someone actually outbids you, you may be tempted to spend more for the item then you were initially willing to spend. Even if you win the auction, the price of the item may have been pushed up much higher than if you simply sniped the item.

If you wait and don't put down your proxy bid until a few seconds before the auction ends, you may or may not be outbid but you won't spend any more than you initially intended. You also don't give others time to push your proxy bid up.

Don't show your cards until it's actually time to showdown ;).

The point you're missing is that there's always somebody willing to pay more than you. Sniping deprives them--be they real bidders or the seller's shills--of the opportunity to out-bid you.

If you're relying on eBay's bid proxy system, you're paying to much for stuff.
