But my other instructor said...

No kidding I was doing a Stage Check for a Private Pilot applicant the day after Expressjet announced furloughs.

"My instructor said I could be a captain at expressjet two years from now, so I'm pretty much set; and people say you can't make a living as a pilot."

my response

"Didn't express just furlough a ton of pilots?"

My buddy (business owner, real go getter, all that) keeps telling me I should just find out which guy does the hiring at FedEx (theres just one of them apparently) and go introduce myself.

So, all you have to do is just talk to whoever does the hiring at XJT and convince them your a good guy, and you're in.

One of those guys is on site here. Hope you've been a good kid! :)

Had a student show up for a night flight with one of those goofy head lights that you wear on your forehead...I commented...Nice head light...

"Yeah my last instructor told me I had to get one of these...required by law to fly at night."

hmm

Now I have done that, but only because the airplanes we had did not have cockpit lighting.

I don't think he even thought that far ahead, just that it was a given to get hired where you want, when you want, and career progression just happens with the changing of the seasons.
