building time

how did you all build flight time towards your commercial? I'm trying to figure out an affordable way to get that 100 or so hours between the instrument ride and commercial training. . . : /

rent 150's or join a flying club are good ways to bust it out. there are TONS of flying clubs in California. a good site for finding them is landings.com

I did a LOT of safety pilot time with a guy who was both building time and working on his instrument.

Find somebody looking to build time as well, guys rent a Cessna 150/152 and fly da heck out of the plane.

I sorta hate to mention this....but....50 of the 250 hours total required for a part 61 commercial can be done in an FAA approved ground trainer, such as the ATC610.

The reason I hate to mention it is that I find the ATC610 useful for about 10 hours towards an IFR rating...and that's about it. Not sure what you'd practice in one for 50 hours...but....if the price was right, guess you could figure something out.

I actually went out and bought a 76 Cessna 150 and sold it about a year later. When I added up all my expenses (fuel, oil, annual, misc mx, insurance, taxes and tie down) over that period and figured out the per hour figure (about 125 hrs) I was incurring it was only about $20/hr. Good way to go if you youve got the money and can find a hassle free plane.

Split the time with someone else. If one of you is under the hood, the other can act as safety pilot and you both can log the hrs. 50 hrs in a sim is an eternity!. It will count towards the rating, but not towards total time. If you are going to pay dual for a sim, you might as well just split the time and do it as a safety pilot. I split time to build up hrs for my ASEL, and had a blast shooting just about every approach south of Fresno. Just my cent and a half worth! ( I would have 2, but I'm still a CFI,lol)

yeah its sorta a tie up between buying a plane to fly the hell out of for a year or investing in a flying club. oh yeah and i found a cheap, close club through landings. thanks

My Dad bought a Piper Comanche off a friend of his who put a new panel in his MU2. Thats how Im building my time. Most of the time I pick him up from work (WHP, FUL) and fly down to John Wayne everynow and then to help my Mom get our house in HB ready to sell. If you fly out of SNA im not to far, we could spilt the gas.1964 PA24 250hp 12-13gph 160kts (i think it might be 165kts now with some of the speed mods) Has a kick a$$ panel........for the 1970s, just DME, 2KX155s, and a autopilot. I cant bit*h tho.

let me know

A simple fix is to find a Part 141 approved school... There are a lot of them out there (both big an small). Under part 141, you don't have to do the time building!!! Yes, if you do it Part 61, and do it all XC, it's great experience. But, I say, do the ratings the cheapest and quickest way... and then have someone pay you to build the hours; i.e., as a CFI, jump pilot, or other.

Good luck.
