Building a Hangar Condo

I have to dig around, but some guy built a hangar condo in Little Rock at the private field just east of town. The hangar portion was OPEN to the entire house; basically, the living room looked down into the hangar which was large enough for 2 planes. I never saw it finished, but I do have some pics of the construction while it was going on. The guy who owns the airpark said the lot was about 15K and he thought the cost of building it was about 70K. This was about 6 years ago. I'll see if I can find the pics and post 'em. It was freakin' cool!!!

Not going to lie, I love that idea. Would be great fun to build a place out of those. With the prices of the containers and a little bit of work on your own, you could have a nice looking place for not a ton of money.

My Dad's Dad. who died before I ever met him, worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and for the first 7 years of my Dad's life they lived in a converted boxcar that was turned into a house. Like a more substantial mobile home. Dad still talks about it.

I bought a hangar with the idea of turning it into a part time condo. It's 40x60, plus two rooms and a bathroom. It's in Deer Park, WA and I kinda lost interest in the project. 75K and it could be yours.

I still love the idea of living with your plane. I did it with a seaplane but the drawbacks were too much. Basically, other than the plane, I wasn't much of a lake guy. Now, if I could just find a two seater that could operate out of my 200 foot field, I'd be set.

It all sounds ideal to live with your plane - and I think at the right place it could be. My Grandpa told me that if he had to do it over again he wouldn't have a runway in the backyard though. Too much mowing, too much maintenance and it gets in the way of flying. He said that it would be ideal to live about 5 minutes from the airport - maybe ten - and have someone else mow the runway. He said it improved after I turned ten and could reach the pedals on the tractor though.

Here are a couple of pics of the place I was talking about. Like I said, I didn't see it when it was done, but I loved the idea of the hangar "being a part" of the L.R.

;)

on topic...$70k seems pretty cheap to have a new place to live and a place to put an airplane. I'd totally do it.

At our hangar in socal we built a single room/kitchen, full bath, and washer/dryer combo outiside for around 40k. That's high end cabinets, tile in the kitchen, bathroom, shower (design was based on a marriott suite). I'll try and remember to snap some pics tomorrow.

That's pretty suite! Sounds like a good way to spend 40K in my opinion.

You hunting up @ 8T8? You should get that 10 acre lot and sell me 2 of 'em for about 50K. :D

Actually, I did take a look at 8T8. If I could find what I was looking for, I think that would be my first choice given the proximity to work. I drove around the airport looking at the various properties, but didn't find any of the hangars for sale. While I suppose it'd be kind of cool to build exactly what I want, I'd be even better if I drove by something that was exactly what I was looking for (preferably around the San Antonio area). I wonder how much the 10 acre lot is?
