if I'm gonna be laid off, might as well be doing something I really love!

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm with you on that one. May as well do something you really like instead of something that you're okay with but that you don't really enjoy. There's a chance you'll get laid off no matter what you do or how well you do it, so who cares if your job is considered safe or not?

After all, the guys now seeing their programing jobs get shipped off to Bangalore thought they had safe jobs.

I have no regrets about leaving Eagle for AA. Doing so cost me everything, but for a few brief months I had 'it all' (or so I thought at the time). I was not happy at Eagle, and leaving for AA was one of the best things I ever did. It gave me a chance to work the 'big iron' and see more of the US than I ever would have with AE. At the time international bids in JFK & BOS were at two years. The timing of my transfer combined with 9/11 cost me my apartment, my job, basically my life as I knew it.

But........

It gave me the opportunity to get my PPL, get married and have our baby! My life now is happier than I ever thought posssible, despite it being very different than the life I'd always imagined.

Do what you love, and if you lose it, you've still had the experience of a lifetime!

Amber, apologies if you've answered this one in the past, but I'm curious ... what are your plans? Do you want to go back to being an FA sooner or later, stick with being a full-time Mom, or something else altogether?

The job as FA has changed, and I'm not sure it's something I want to go back to. I have given it a lot of thought, and still have not decided whether or not I'll ever fly as a FA again. Right now I can't because we don't have access to round-the-clock day care, and I'm so far down the recall list it's not really like I'll be getting recalled any time soon.

When we can afford it (meaning when Bill upgrades which will be a few years!) I'll continue with my flying, and get my instrument, commercial & multi ratings. I've used my time off to complete my college degree. Which is something that had been haunting me since the day I dropped out of college, almost 10 years ago now. So I will finish my ratings, and hopefully find my place in an airliner a few years down the road. It'll be a while, but that's okay.

Last year when we seriously thought Bill was in danger of furlough (which would have been really bad) I went through real estate appraisal school. I knew nothing about real estate, and now I do! I took & passed the state test 10 days before Alex was born. I have not actively worked as an appraiser yet, but it's my 'fall back' career! The classes were very interesting, and I'm really glad I took them.

So, I'm stay at home full time for now, and I have no plans to do anything different in the immediate future. In fact, we're thinking of giving Alex a little brother or sister soon! Airplanes will always be there for me to fly, but my baby is only young once.

It’s a sad situation for many pilots and fa's, maybe sooner rather than later things will improve. As someone said earlier the current situation is one reason I am not pursuing my dream of flying, instead I am pursuing my other dream of financial stability [for now], however the TWA guy did kind of provide a balance of information, I'll bet he's told that story to someone, somewhere, who was a true believer in the Flight School Ad's...

On a side note to this, I was talking to a guy today who couldn't understand why a "laid-off pilot, couldn’t survive on his unemployment benefits" ,,,

Ask him just how far he thinks $310 a week, taxable, of course, would get him.

Idiot.

well, I hope this industry isn't a preview of things to come: it seems like the management is always trying to break the unions, and if any opposition occurs, one get's a "thank you, you're fired, we can pay someone in Zimbabwe to do your job for 1/2."

Its very easy to get hum and drum about the aviation industry, and NO, no one ruined my day- I feel for the guy, I really do. The problem was not really him, but one of our CFIs who hates his job because it doesn't make him any big cash "for going out and risking his neck in planes he doesn't trust." Then he walks over to the front desk and tries- without shutting up and going away after awhile, no,- to talk us out of a career in aviation. I've had the SAME discussion with him for the past 3 months! "Why spend $30,000 to get ratings to help you earn 1000/month, when you could get a masters, go out, make 6 digits, and buy yourself a jet."

Leaves me puzzled.

I just wish the nonsense that managers shovel out nowadays should stop. Heck you can even go to a higher level with this discussion to prove that this society will implode into itself, the polarization of wealth will continue, and everything will come crashing down again. My point is that its not just in aviation, even though we feel the brunt of things. Its everywhere- my friend who I used to work with, who always bragged about his salary is now out on his butt because our company downsized, lost a lawsuit, and offshored some IT jobs to save money.

While he is certainly out of line saying things like that in front of students in a flight school (how does he expect to get students doing things like that??), I can honestly say that I've felt the same way. I'm sure most CFI's have. Try to put yourself in his shoes once. It gets really frustrating and hard to stay positive at times. Especially when airplanes are breaking, the weather sucks, students are being difficult, owners are being more difficult, unpaid bills are stacking up, you have no social life because you live at the airport...the list goes on. Things add up.

Yeah, you have a good point there.

But I guess then I can bitch too, I am slogging through an instrument rating costing me mucho bucks while dealing with weather working behind the desk that gets 8/hour to deal with some at times very disgruntled people/egos. I guess we can all find stuff to bitch about. I could just as easily go to ATP and be done in three months, no problem.

I mean, we can all bitch at where we're at, but whats the point? I can understand a TWA's case, but groaning and moaning is pointless- it takes us away from the "WHY" we are here. Why do we want to make the 1000/month and risk our necks? Why are we here, and not doing something else. The moment you loose sight of the WHY, then what you are doing looses meaning. In other words, if I didn't like flying as much as I do, then I sure as hell would not be a cum-laude-college-grad settling for 8/hour behind the desk of an FBO waiting on people. But I'm not here for those reasons, or the money, etc. The job allows networking, allows a nice discount on supplies and aircraft rental... But if this were a starbucks, I sure as heck wouldn't have applied for the job.

Its all about perspective, and reasons for doing things. I just would hope people would keep them more in focus!

Just don't get too nervous! I'm sure being nervous is a big negative in the equation! (it's funny though, because I'm giving advice that I'm sure I wouldn't accomplish! lol)

Oh, so when exactly are you scheduled for the checkride, B? I think that anxiety will build up even more and hurt you a bit more, the more you wait...I'm sure you're ready for it.

(Well at least it seemed the last way we went up! just joking man

Play it for the lady at KFRG's LIJet Center so we can get the landing fee waived! This way you won't pay for the fuel so it can be waived!
