Brown

Lets be honest, most of us would spend a year getting paid in KFC coupons if it meant a career at a legacy.
And now I want KFC!

The first year pay is rough, but I knew this was a possibility at some point and had been saving money. I have 30 years left unless drones take over. If i'd stayed at the acmi joint I was at, i'd lose out on multi millions unless the calculus changes drastically. 10 mil vs 5 mil over 30 years, conservatively, and then there is retirement which tips the scales even further. If you're coming from a better place than i was maybe it's not such a clear choice. Anyway, it's about 60k gross first year including per diem. At least you get a hotel during training and the captains buy you a lot of food.

First year hourly pay is so low that rigs and such don't make much difference. Very little incentive to work extra at such a low hourly rate regardless if it's mostly soft pay. Most of our pay is based on min monthly guarantee (75) or daily trip rig which is (6.4) In other words, you'd have to block more than 6.4 or be on duty more than 12.8 for a day to pay more than trip rig, and that's pretty rare. I'm sort of a slam clicker but if the F/O is probationary I try to get together with them and buy dinner. It's sort of an unwritten rule here.

Thanks, @Alchemy and @DE727UPS. I figure I have one year left to move jobs, and if it doesn't happen in that time, it may not be worth it, since if things keep growing like they are here, I'll probably be upgrading by then. I'm in a little different boat, with only 18.5 years left. I had heard the Brown probies basically don't buy anything, so that is nice. I also am not looking forward to the ANC base, but I'd do what I have to do.

Now, to get somebody to call. ;)

Congrats again!! Sorry to derail the thread...

I’m not too far behind Stone Cold in years left and feel the same way. At K4, soft pay is very minimal, but the hourly rate is high, first year (currently 106.63, will be 110.90 in a few days, here). The monthly guarantee is 64 hours and there is no daily rig. There is just a “line guarantee” and those are so all over the place, you just never know what you’ll get. There are many lines that have less than 60 hours. We can make 4 hours by having a reserve day if we don’t fly, but it’s impossible to break 64 hours by doing reserve only. If you fly a lot, however, that first year pay comes into play and it’s sweet when it happens! But it’s so sporadic and, shall we say, “random” (not really but it feels that way to the uninformed). That’s why I was curious about soft pay. Thanks for answering!

Yeah, and for me the average of year 1 and year 2 f/o salary is equal to what I would've made as a 767 captain at my prior place over the same time period. Granted, the old place will hopefully get a new CBA sometime before the decade is over and it's pretty rough there right now. If you like K4 I don't blame anyone for wating to stay put, home basing/gateway/whatever you call it is worth something too. I even had occassional moments of panic in the weeks leading up to newhire class where I thought I was making a bad move, then came to my senses.

Captain pay at K4 is fairly close to UPS FO pay after year 1

Its kind of scary to give up seniority.

Yeah, can definitely see/understand that. But also understand that UPS is a career job, with career money. That's like how the lifers at SkyWest rationalize not going to a legacy or SWA. Stating that they make a good enough salary and have really great company/base seniority. Why would I ever want to give all that up and start at the bottom again. And go from making six figures, back to five and being on reserve again, in a city that I hate. Living in a crash pad again.

Mainly just nightmare scenarios playing out in my head from time to time where the economy goes south, fuel prices spike, I end up furloughed after moving to ANC and then having to seek work as a bush pilot but no one will hire me because I've got no "alaska time", so I go back to the bottom of an ACMI or apply to home depot. I'd imagine it's the same kinda cold feet people get when getting married, even if it's to someone you know is the best guy or gal in the world for you.

So I take it ANC is JR at Brown?

Yeah. The jets all pay the same (although the international fleets pay slightly more due to some overrides and productivity) and it's generally easier to get to SDF, ONT, or MIA than ANC unless you happen to live in AK or the pacific NW.

Please don’t throw me in that briar patch!

High risk, high reward. I was faced with giving up seniority for what I wanted vs. staying in a job I really didn't want anymore. Yes, I was laid off, yes it was rough, but I just couldn't have stayed anymore.

Not really. Ebbs and flows. New hires go to ONT all the time. At the moment, I wouldn't want to be in ONT unless you live in the area. Commuters are fleeing the base. There are those who can live in ANC and more power to them. It's a good deal for them. At the moment, there is a huge shortage in the 74 ANC base.

Yeah, except making zero dollars when there are no flying jobs makes it hard to pay your mortgage.
