Bringing Food Into Canada

A did a quick search to no avail...

So, I have an overnight in Toronto tomorrow and this is the first time I've brought my lunch pale with me knowing I have an overnight in Canada. Would I be allowed to bring a sandwich I made and some pre-packaged snacks just as long as I declare them? What items would be an issue for me to bring so I know for next time?

Thanks everyone

I have yet to have a problem. Declare the sandwiches and call your snacks what they are. Be it trail mix or mixed nuts.

Don't stress it.

What items would be an issue for me to bring so I know for next time?

Fruits and vegetables would be the biggest offenders. Meat is generally a no-no as well, but most of the time Canadian customs won't care about things like beef jerky.

I always declared, and then got laughed at for declaring "$1.50 lunch meat"

Nah. My motto is declare the crap out of it. During the flight in I'll list everything... Almonds, granola bars, cheese, meat, smoked oysters, dried fruit, etc. They look at my list and don't waste their time.

One thing the Canadians are really weird about is certain fruit. Apples and Oranges for sure. They'll make you toss them, and will even watch to make sure you do it.

I've never declared anything and I always carry an Aerocoast cooler/laptop bag full of Cliff/Odwalla/Breakfast bars, peanut butter, bread,etc... I've never seen another crew member declare his food either if it's prepakcaged stuff.

I do however declare my smokes that I get at Duty Free before departure.

Sounds like I better start doing that.

I have 3 Canadian overnights on this trip. I have a cooler/lunchbox full of prepackaged bars, some pasta that I made at home before I left, some random other crap and they didn't
t care one bit. Fresh fruit is the only thing that got one of the other crew members. I don't bring any fresh fruit/veg if I know I'm going to Canada, but other than that, they don't typically care. Coming back into the US, the guy spent about 0.1 second looking at my form and let me go. Don't sweat it.

Well after the 7th schedule revision in 2 days, I am no longer going to Canada, but thanks for all the replies...now I know for next time.

Don't bring avocados. Canada didn't care, but the US customs sent me to agriculture and went through all of my things because I declared an avocado. Leave the stickers on all of your produce. They were fine with apples grown in the US, but they had to have the sticker.

Also, as mentioned before, oranges are a no-no. Or anything else tropical like mangos or avocados.
