Boys Day Out - Suggestions?

ZapBrannigan

If it ain’t a Boeing, I’m not going. No choice.
Hello all,

So i'll have been gone for 5 days on this trip and promised my 4 year old son that i'll pick him up from school on Friday for a "boys day out" afterwards. I'm trying to think of something fun that he and I can do together.

It's forecast to be partly cloudy and around 40-45 degrees, light winds.

I've thought of the usual indoor activities (since it'll be cool out) bowling, indoor go-karts (not sure if he's tall enough), etc. But I want it to be something special for him since i've been away so much lately. Anybody have any good ideas?

Thanks in advance.

If like my kids going to McDs and drink coffee while they are playing will be the world to them. Just make sure you take photos. Check heights in advance so no disappointment when you get there.

Normally that would be ok, but I've been gone a lot this month and want to find something that we can do together.

Hiking is always good in the cooler weather, and nothing warms a kid up after that than a juicy burger from wendys or sonic afterwards. Heck after all then when you are back home end it with a movie too.

Well, you're a pilot so why don't you rent a plane and go flying? It will be a great experience for him.

I'm too chicken to fly anything that does not have GPWS, TCAS, and at least two turbine engines. Oh, and I'm cheap.

My foster son loves just going to the airport and watching airplanes. Every time I come home from 30+ days on the road, I pull him out of school, we head up to watch airplanes, then head to McD's for playground time. He is an easygoing little guy, though, so ymmv. Just remember, it is more about the time together than what you do. We also go out in the yard and play "baseball" or football. Even bike riding with our yellow lab is just what he wants to do some times...What does your son like to do?

I'm betting he'd just be thrilled to have dad hang out with him for the day regardless of what you do! That's how mine was at that age when I'd be gone for a few days. Still is, to some extent. If it was summer, I'd suggest a minor league BB game. Do you have an AHL team in town? Not very exciting hockey, but there's a lot of show/sideline entertainment for kids.

:yeahthat:
My dad has a job where he is gone two weeks at a time, maybe more. I just wanted to do anything with him when he got home. Sometime it was projects around the house, sometimes it was fishing, or working on a car. Even a day doing errands could be fun. Just spending time with you is all that he wants.

Legos. Buy a couple cool sets and build them together (if he's into that kinda stuff). Or take him to an Imax movie then walk around the mall and get lunch. Maybe hit an arcade while you're there... I'm sure he will be stoked no matter where you take him.

i like the projects around the house idea...knowing he'll not only be with you but helping you might be nice.

other suggestion: science center or art museum...if he's into those things

+1
Go for a walk, come back and play x-box, make something to eat together, and/or paint a picture together or something.

The time you spend together doesn’t need to be elaborate or long, but your alone time with him should be “quality”.

My dad was gone a lot when I was growing up too. I most remember one morning when my dad had his flight suit on, boots polished up, and was getting ready to head out to the flight line, but he took me out on the back porch with our beagle and just hung out and talked instead of just rushing off right away like he normally did. Nobody there but me, him, and Snoopy. I don't have any idea why that morning is so clear to me to this day, some 35 years later. I guess sometimes little things mean a lot, and it helps to show that you love him, care for him, and think about him.

Have you asked him what he might like to do?

Also, another thing I liked is when my dad would send me a postcard from whatever part of the world he was TDY at. It was nice. Kids love to get mail, especially if it lets them know they're special to you and that you're thinking of them.

i agree with pedro, Legos would be fun.. or how about make a hot wheels race track and race it'll be a memorable, every time he sees the lego or the hot wheel race track he remember the day you guys build it together.... then go out for indoor go-kart like you said or if you guys are into sports how about a sporting event maybe.

overall whatever you decide to do, you are doing an awesome job sir :)

Unfortunately he came down with a bad cold, so we snuggled up and watched a Pixar movie. We'll try for another boys day next weekend.

I'd say grab some icecream on your way home, stash it in the freezer. Wake the boy up or have him up past his bed time and eat some icecream together. I second that just spending time with you would most likely be all he wants.

Win. Playing the games with you will be a blast for him...throw in getting ice cream or something and he'll be psyched.

I suggest skee ball and some sort of shooting game.

When that's done putt putt.

When that's done, shoot real guns at skee balls and golf balls.
