Box Hold

Hello all,

I was flying into South Valley Regional (U42) airport yesterday but had to divert to KSLC due to an accident at U42. It was pretty nasty at KSLC so I was getting vectored by the approach controller for spacing. While vectoring, he asked me if I could accept a 'BOX HOLD'. I was about to say I have no idea what a box hold is but he came back on the radio and said disregard, I can actually squeeze you in.

I just got my IR rating about 2 months ago and to tell you the truth, have never heard of such a term.

Could you all explain it for me please?

Thanks

Sina,

I would say that it is a vector holding pattern... in other words, he gives you vectors to keep flying in a box shape pattern.

It is just a way to vector you, like it says, in a box pattern. It is mostly done with smaller, slower aircraft to keep you relatively close to the final. In doing so, it is a little easier for the controller to build a small gap for you to fit in rather than having you fly a long final. Make sense?

Yup, makes perfect sense now. Thanks for explaining it :)

Yes, it makes sense, but is there a reference to it? When the controller tossed it out to the pilot as a question, how did he expect the pilot to know what was being asked?

I had a 'box hold' one time here at KICT. And 'yes' it was a series of vectors after the controller told me what she was going to do.

The controller giving me a 'heads-up' with her intentions really helped with the situational awareness as I originally being vectored for an ILS.
