Bomb Threats DL SWA effect ATL

Isn't this something like the 3rd threat against Delta in the past couple of weeks. JFK, RDU, and then this one...

I'm guessing that as pax, you don't really want to look out the window and see this...............

Hope they find the little moron.......not only to punish him severely, but to discourage others from following suit.

I've always wondered, when fighter jets are scrambled to escort an airliner that reports and unruly pax, what exactly is the fighter jet going to do to assist, apart from the obvious? Be a witness?

I can see fighters sent to assist aircraft in distress. There was an interesting intercept over eastern NM back in the early 1990s...didn't make much news from what I remember.

"Go ahead and try and take over that airplane. I dare you!"

It's the psychological aspect of it I'd imagine.

That's really funny, but true. I always picture the Captain taking the pax by the scruff of his neck and just smashing his face against a cabin window while the fighter rolls over and shows him his junk and the Captain saying, "See, see what chit you have caused us now you idiot! Now sit in your damn seat, eat your bag of nuts and shut the hell up "

What was the incident?

The situation I was describing was related to me when I was based at HMN in the 117. Apparently, in the early 1990s, there was a 727 airliner headed to DFW (can't remember which airline specifically, think it may have been USAir) and was on J4 between EWM and INK eastbound when ATC lost comms with it. After trying various means to establish comms, ZAB decided to vector a pair of nearby fighters that were working in the Talon MOA, as no others were available. The fighters were Luftwaffe Tornado IDS out of HMN. So when the intercept was made, the pax and crew saw this.

Turned out to be nothing, but kind of an interesting situation to have Luftwaffe fighter jets intercepting a U.S.-registered aircraft over U.S. soil and airspace. :)

Oh for cripes sakes! That is "interesting" to say the least. Send in the Germans who are here training. Too funny. The Nighthawks used to be over Holloman I think. In looking a few minutes ago at NORAD's site, I was truly shocked to see how many times they launch jets into the air from various bases because of some GA plane or an airliner or a whatever aircraft and some issue, or they are not ID'd/unidentified tracks or "suspicious" or something, which most often, turns out to be bupkis. It's much more frequent that I ever would have imagined, actually. Homestead has dozens of scrambles a year for example and some of the scrambles from bases have to do with drug smuggling? Who knew.

At the time I was at HMN, we had USAF F-117/T-38/F-4 operations, and German AF F-4 & Tornado operations with their Training Wing. Also had an alert barn with Texas ANG F-16s out of Houston based there.

Do the Germans still train there? I've always like the Tornados. Got to see a couple from the RAF once at the Paris show a hundred years ago. The F-16's are very cool. Some of the states/Guard units I believe lost theirs during some cut backs a few years ago. Sad. They are wonderful birds. As you know, we have the 144th up North here and they perform a varied number of types of missions. I am not sure who has the largest base for them any longer as they also have a large unit in Colorado. Do you know by chance?

Yes. Their F-4 operations shut down in 2004, but the 2nd GAF Training Wing of their Training Center still does Tornado IDS training ops there.

Houston lost their F-16s in 2009 or so, as did many other F-16 units. Biggest F-16 base is still Luke AFB, with 6 squadrons that train F-16 pilots (was 9 squadrons at one time.)
