SEATTLE, April 26, 2004 - The Boeing Company's board of directors has approved the formal launch of the new 7E7 Dreamliner passenger jet based on today's firm order for 50 7E7s from ANA (All Nippon Airways) and the overall strong business case for the new airplane. The ANA order is the largest launch order in history for a new Boeing commercial jet.

While I'm still broken up over the loss of the 'Sonic Cruiser' I'm glad to see the 'Dreamliner' moving forward. Even though it lacks the imagination of the 'Cruiser' design.

If Boeing thought the demand was there, they could always bring the SC back to life.

Even though the SC was a really cool concept, the 7E7 is much more practical and I think it's going to be right up there as one of the best selling Boeing airplanes of all time.

The SC represented what I thought was a leap forward in aircraft design, while the 7E7 is really not to far removed from what’s already flying. I think Boeing should have taken that leap forward. I know Airbus in giving Boeing hell right now in the market place, that’s why I would have like to see Boeing really push the envelop of design.

Actually some of the technology that was proposed with the Sonic Cruiser was passed on to the 7E7. The 7E7 is no slouch in technology improvements, 20% in fuel savings is quite impressive, not sexy like the Sonic Cruiser. The 7E7 will cruise at Mach 0.85 going 8200 NM, which are the same speeds as the 747 & 777, do not believe that the 767-400ER will go at that speed. Some of the graphites were from the Sonic Cruiser proposal.

DTA raises a good point. But I guess being a pilot, I'm more interested in sexy, radical designs, but since the airlines are run by beancounters and Harvard MBA's, 20% savings is 20% savings.

Ye I agree Doug.
However I'm suprised to see oders so soon.
I thought they were expecting orders towards the end of the year?

Good luck to Boeing!

Cheers

I'm just surprised their actually going to build it, but they sure need to if they want to stay competitive. It's kind of disapointing that the high value-added components (e.g. the wings) won't be built in the US. Still, it keeps us in the commercial airplane business for the foreseeable future.

And supposedly, Lufthansa and Alitalia are right behind ANA in the order pool.

Lufthansa sounds good, but Alitalia? Uh, before they buy new airplanes...but I guess their management will blame the pilots unions as well, huh?
