717 My butt! That's a DC9/80/82/88/90.....!

Boeing builds airplanes, Douglas builds character!

If the truth were to be known, I'd bet the original 717 was really the KC135!

Oh well, never liked it anyways. However, I do feel bad for the people that will loose their jobs and I hope they find something soon.

sucks for airtran. But I think they were moving towards '37s anyways. I think the plane's really ugly though, so I'm not disappointed about that. But I know people who work at Boeing, and they get scared every time Boeing starts talking about moving operations or ending production. Does anyone know what plant 717s are made at? If any one in particular at all?

According to the the first comment on this post:

It really stinks that Boeing had the best 100 seat airplane on the market and couldn't sell it. First the 757 and now this.

On the bright side, hopefully the planned 737 replacement will be very exciting and may fill the void left by the 717's departure. I'm sure Airbus is celebrating today, not that their A318 is anything to brag about.

717 aircraft are built at the Long Beach, California Boeing plant.

The 717 plant is near Boeing's C-17 plant, both of which are in Long Beach. I got to tour the C-17 plant in November when my aircraft design class went and presented some of our designs to the Phantom Works guys down the road from there. The winglets on the C-17 are freakin' huge when you see them laying on the ground in a crate! Oh, and those engines aren't small either.

Sorry for digressing there.

Yeah, I understand they had to reinter several deceased Douglas folks when Boeing started claiming the DC-3 in it's lineage.

If it ain't got suitcase handles, I'll pass, thanks.

i flew on 717's a few times on airtran and thought they were pretty sweet planes, of course i was sitting in the back. actually really wanted to fly those someday, i hope they replace them with something even better. is the 7E7 supposed to fill the slot?

No, the 7E7 is much bigger. It's supose to carry about 250 pax and have a range of 8500 miles. It fall into more of a trans-continental role.

They had major competition in that market, worse than ANY they've ever faced from Airbus. Embraer and Bombardier have been wiping the floor in the 100 seat market, when they can find airlines that can get the financing. Boeing just wasn't in a position to offer the financing deals after the DOD debacle with the tankers and pressure from Airbus in other markets. Add the projected development costs of the 7E7 into the mix, and really Boeing's space and missile divisions are what's keeping them afloat.

I do find it kinda sad that a Boeing plane was more or less forced out of production by a "regional" jet......

Much more complicated than that.....

It's what was the McDonnell-Douglas plant at Long Beach.

Built a lot of stuff there, most notably all 60 USAF KC-10s. Plus MD11s, MD 80 series and who knows what else.

Highlight of my Air Force career was picking up a brand spanking new KC10 (ship 23) from the factory...smelled like a new car. Had all of 3.7 hours on it! Still have the medallion with the cockpit door keys on it they give you (actually the General Officer who symbolically accepts the airplane) when you pick one up. The General graciously gave me the medallion/keys as I was the PIC for the flight out.

Thank you God for allowing me to have such a great life in aviation!

Could you please expound on the bolded sentence above and explain your reasoning for those of us who haven't flown either Boeings or Douglas aircraft and compare and contrast the two companies how they differ in there approach to building planes and how they fly?

They're closing the plant? what'bout all our friends there that were so nice to give us the tour? are they getting the opportunity to move up to Seattle or are they just getting a pink slip?

I guess if you want a tour of Boeing/Alteon like we did last year, it'll have to be at our next OC gathering (or maybe that just wouldn't be appropriate anymore?).

Mike, what's going to happen with Alteon? are they going to move also?

Max

Boeing has been discussing a 737 replacement, using the technology from the 7E7. If it does happen, the date of 2012 was mentioned, nothing firm.
