BMI > 35, new medical rules

So what exactly, are they looking for if BMI is not the only issue they are looking at for OSI?

(Sorry bro, you know the rules about profanitiy -DT)

Yes, I understand it's a screen. What I am asking is, what, exactly are they looking for when BMI is over 35?
"Dude! You're a damn tank!"
Yeah, I got that. What now?

No medical until having an overnight sleep test.
If diagnosed a CPAP is ordered and you must verify you wore it at least 4 hours a night for 3 to six weeks before the medical can be issued- hence go in 2 months before your medical expires.

This is just more self righteousness.

Oh look I'm skinny. You fatties need to be put in your place. Let's start with humiliating you by taking away your career for an imagined disorder that you have zero symptoms of not any family history of, just because you lift weights.

Nevermind all the alcoholics, smokers, drug abusers etc flying around. You snored once while you were sleeping. Here where this mask for the rest of your life.

I'm going to get flagged for this. 5'9" and 275. But my blood pressure is 90/70, blood work is clean and a resting heart rate of 55ish, ie I fracking healthy but I'm not pretty so off I go.

I guess the plus side is my medical isn't due until May so I can starve myself for 2 months and maybe get down to 240 and be week as hell....

Power lifter?

Your measurements are just like a great friend of mine from high school. He's a power lifter and it shocks me how much weight the guy can throw.

If people think it's about weight or fitness, they're absolutely wrong.

I have a good friend who was a marathon runner, ate well, fit as a fiddle (there's an anachronism) that had a heart attack on final approach IN THE CAPTAINS SEAT to JFK.

Fat folks at least know it's not healthy. Skinny people may be ticking timebombs and not even realize it.

Yup. I hate running or "cardio" so lift to stay healthy. The side effect being in heavy.
Mid course I could loose 30 pounds and still keep my strength but that won't make me any healthier.

The plus side to all this is I'm determine to get the extra off, I'll look better naked at least.

FAA or DOT?

The current method from the FAA is if you get "screened" and are deemed to have undiagnosed OSA you have 90 days to complete an eval. That eval can be with your AME, a home study or a full blown sleep study.

You get to keep your medical and fly during all this and while getting treated.

Be thankful the overlords are being so kind.

Well guess I gotta get off my fat ass and get back in gym. I've always have struggled with my weight. To be in my best shape requires me to work out 2hrs a day, 5-6 days a week. I miss the days of being single.

I absolutely hate running as well. It hammers my joints and I just can't stand it. So I decided if I was going to run 3 miles, I'll walk 6. I went from 210 to 180 in about four months by walking and eating a bit healthier. If you've got two hours, that's 8 miles easy. I started reading some walking studies. I found that walking is about 80-90% as effective as running, especially after around 3 miles. At my peak I was doing 15-17 miles at a time. It gets addictive.

Sorry, but it's not a made up disorder. And simply snoring does not mean you have OSA. If you don't have it, you have nothing to worry about, and if you do you'll want to treat it and not die.

No one is saying it is made up or that it isn't serious IF you have it.

The problem for me is this:

I'm going to go to my medical in May, the doc (at Mayo) is going to look me over, we are going to discuss this and he is going to come to the same conclusion I have, I don't have OSA. My medical is going to be sent to OKC like normal where somebody down there is going to DIAGNOSE me with OSA simply because of my BMI. I am then going to have to PAY to jump through the hoops to prove that I don't, even though I stated as such AND my AME did.

Correlation is not causation. Plenty of "skinny" folk have OSA but they aren't being single out for "screening".

This is akin to making folks go through substance abuse training just because they had 5 drinks in a row one night.

I hear you. I just get bored with running, just doesn't do it for me.

I'll take you up on the walking thing, dog will like it too.

Do you have a problem also with gay men who have at risk sex being screened for the HIV?

Diseases that have a common trait should be screened for those with the trait. It is beneficial for you! Why is this so hard?

Also why do Americans brag about being heavy? It is unhealthy! If you have 80kg, it is in general not as healthy as having 70 kg. Americans love to act like being fat is a right, it is poor math (kCal in vs kCal out) and generally unhealthy eating or lack of exercise that is it.

Only gay folks are at risk for HIV? Good to know!

Being healthy and heavy is ok. I don't need to fit into skinny jeans.

My preference for fitness is moving large masses and not just my ass. That shouldn't be held against me since it doesn't effect my health nor dispose me to OSA.
