Blue Juice question

JordanD

Here so I don’t get fined
So I got the fantastic assignment of dumping lavs on ERJ/CRJs 3 nights a week. I've got a couple questions for anybody who's done this regularly. Is there any way to prevent the "clean" blue juice from spilling out between the time you disconnect the filler hose and close the filler cap, or is spillage pretty much inevitable as I've been told. Seems like it'd make sense to have a valve that prevents this like there is on the dump port. And is there ANY conceivable way to make sure nothing comes out when I open the fill port? It seems like no matter how long I stand there draining the lav some...errr, dirty blue stuff comes out the filler port when I first open it.

Depends how your lav cart is set up. If all the valves on the cart are open, and you can turn the pump off, the blue juice should gravity feed back into the tank. But, because CRJ's and ERJ's are so low to the ground, it won't be quick. Other wise just let er rip on the ramp.

Bleh, why oh why can' there be a valve on the filler port?! Having to do it sans reqiured protective equipment isn't too fun, so the leaking stuff is something I'm trying to avoid.

I'd give OSHA a call if that's the case.

I'm the only one that really complains about it (or uses it) so it'd be pretty obvious who made the complaint.

So? I'm going to assume they at least give you gloves? If not, I wouldn't even try to do the job. Hepatitis is nothing to laugh at, and a line job isn't worth it.

Yeah we have gloves. Not the right heavy duty kind, but I haven't had a problem with them breaking. I know it's nothing to laugh at but your odds of contracting it with this kind of work are pretty remote unless you get smurfed on a pretty regular basis.

Good luck with that

Not really, it depends how much is in the filler line to the reservoir. The only way it gets up there is the pressure of the pump sending it up there. So when you unhook, the remainder that hasn't flowed into the reservoir comes back down.

It moves around in flight and from the toilet being used, so it usually flows back over. When you open it to fill it, it drains out again. When hooking it up, be quick. You'll learn to do lavs the hard way. Most people who have done them have literally been pissed on before they knew what to do. Accept it and move on.

Just wait till they freeze to!

I've made a mental note of our ERJs that have dump ports with valves that won't close all the way. Opened one the other week and it did an "automatic dump". :( Fortunately my ninja skills saved me. :D

Beats the FBO that pulled the dump handle and didn't dump it.

I'm always careful for that, but I've never had it happen to me.

*knock on wood*

Stupid jokesters.
The fantastic thing about RJs is it's impossible for someone to pull that kind of stunt. Dunno why anybody thinks that's funny.

How so? does the CRJ have the flap that cant be flipped with the cap closed?

When it happened to me it was on a Falcon 2000. As soon as a turned the dump cap and the threads were off, I felt pressure. I kept my hand there fully extended my arm, backed away upwind, let the bottom of the cap go before the top, then pulled that straight out....very quickly. Didn't get any on me.

That's if it happens to you on a Falcon, anything else you're pretty much screwed. :)

FWIW if you do stain clothes with a small amount clean blue juice, itll take about 20 washes to remove.
"The Monster" must have thought about that when they gave us blue uniforms. Doesn't help my stupidity of wearing shoes that I actually like to work though.

I like how the excuse for not ordering new PPE was "Oh, when we had it nobody wore it anyway." That and "Oh you had to touch the heavy duty gloves when you took them off and they were covered in crap."

It's called wearing another pair of gloves underneath, moron.

I think, but to be honest I'm not 100 percent sure. I'm not gonna go lifting the spring loaded thing to find out. The ERJ and CRJ are pretty much the exact same design minus the stupid detachable blue juice cap on the ERJ.

Try dumping a lav on a 757 where you essentially hook the hose up vertically above your head and stand under it . You WILL get some on you.. Especially after a full flight on a long haul.. The smell is horrendous..

Been there done that!!! Even worse if someone pulled the dump handle before opening the outer flapper. And even worse than that if you are standing on top of the lav cart, and to jump out of the way means you'll probably break your leg.
