No, sure don't. But Michelle Malkin is a fantastic writer on issues like this. She's a work-at-home mom.

I see this stuff coming home with my kids all the time, and most of them are in college! It's scary to some extent, but mostly a good laugh.

Too bad Michelle doesn't get a wider audience.

This will end up in the lav soon, supprised it wasn't posted there to begin with.

What's wrong with pacifism? I can tell you from experience that the way you piss people off is to beat up them, and kids know this from an early age. Want to see someone get filled with the rage it takes to slaughter someone? Treat them like crap, kick dirt in their face and then tell them that they don't deserve to live. It's no different when other country's do it.

I would like to take a minute to say that while i was in elementry school the gulf war was going on. I don't really remember too much about it other than we made valentines for the soliders and put candy and gum in them.

I do remember from elementry school though that they had a "use your words, not your fists" campaign going on to reduce fighting in schools. They also started a conflict resolution program and have since kept it going. My elementry school had very few fights, and those were basically a shoving match. There were more shouting matches, but those kids were "using words" instead of their fists. now, compare that to John Herreshoff's school where they had no such programs. Fights were a regular occurance, if you weren't on the giving end you were on the recieving end. A kid even got the crap beat out of him in the hallway so bad that blood was everywhere and ended up being put in the hospital. The other kid got a 3 day suspension

so what is so wrong with teaching kids pascifism and conflict resolution?

Conflict resolution is great, and all kids should learn it.

Pacifism? That would be kind of like teaching kids Christianity. It's not the place of the school to teach that. Parents have a role, and this is it.

I'm far from a peacenik, but I don't like war. Having lost quite a few of my friends to stupid stuff, I think we should avoid war if we can.

There is a time and a place, however.

Agreed. My personal opinion is that you shouldn't be teaching kids that violence is the first solution to anything, which where I'm from seemed to be the way things went. From my end of things (the recieving end), I can explain to you pretty well why they do the things they do when pressed to it. I figure that should be avoided as much as possible.

Public schools shouldn't be teaching "values" of any kind. It's up to parents to decide which "values" they want their children to learn, not schoolteachers.

Well now that's loaded isn't it? That would be to say that it's ok if a kid wants to kick the sh*t out of another kid because their parents teach them the value of striking someone down first? And it'd be fine for someone to call someone a certain word that starts with F day after day because they don't care for gay people?

Sorry bro, not on my watch. People deserve a certain amount of respect and dignity. That's what this is about, conflict resolution so that people talk out their differences before they start throwing punches and/or berate people day after day.

What *responsible* parent is going to teach their kids any of that?

I can name you 12 that taught their kids to hate black folks out of my graduting class. What me to start naming names?

No one said all parents were responsible.

Aloft and john both have valid points....

The reason we don't allow kids to use racial and ethnic slurs is because it's against the rules.

With regards to teaching values, well, that's where parenting comes in. I'm not sure about Michigan, but teaching your kids to be racist will get them taken away where I come from.

I don't want my kids to learn to be Conservative or Democrat in school. I want them to learn the facts, and make their own decision.

I don't want them to learn that the only way is war or peace. I do want them to understand that war isn't the noble gesture that some will make it out to be. I want them to see pictures of caskets coming home. I want them to hear about families without parents and brothers. I want them to have guest speakers that have lost limbs in combat.

I also want them to understand how our military works. I want them to know about all of the branches of the militart service. I want them to have the opportunity to speak to people that have served in the military honorably. Just as I want them to learn that dentistry is a viable career option, I also want them to know that careers as logistics or aviation officers are also possible (I sincerly hope that by that time, they'll have the option of being infantry officers - but I doubt we'll be that civilized as a people yet). I want them to understand the whole picture, and then combine that with MY philosophy, and let them make their own choice.

The last thing I want is for a public school teacher to teach them any of that (unless it's a subject-specific course).

I ramble too much...did any of that make sense? I don't know...as a parent, sometimes I see things in a weird kinda way.

well said MTSU, i agree with you. In michigan though, teaching your kids to be racist (or whatever) isn't going to get your kid taken away. In some parts of michigan, they will even praise that!! (about 15 miles from John's hometown there is a KKK cell, about 30 miles from Ann Arbor is another one...*sigh*)THe FIA is too busy worrying about the kids being starved or abused and getting them out and finding them foster homes to worry about what you're teaching your kids. As long as they are being fed and taken care of properly, they could care less about what you teach them.

It's against the rules, who's rules? Who made the rules? Isn't that legsilating morality and values? Where do you draw the line? I've found a lot of people running across that line with nothing being done about it.

I'd like to say that people do something about racism and the like where I'm from, but they don't. There's a KKK cell about 15 minutes from my house, and there's one black kid in the entire school system (really feel bad for the dude). In addtion, there was also one jewish person in our system system. Diversity and tolerance were not on the list of things to be taught in my school. If you want to know the truth, not much else makes me more angry than intolerance, and when I see people trying to fight it I get pretty pissed off (if we're being honest). My entire community is a complete and utter failure as far as I'm concerned, and no one seemed to care. We never had anything to deter people from using fists instead of talking things out, wish we had.

Cheers

I agree completely. If we can figure that one out, we can package it and make millions!!!

I know what you mean. It's bad, and it's getting worse. In many ways, I'm glad that these girls get to experience the world, and in other ways I'm so sorry that they get to experience the world.

Like I said before, I'm no pacifist. At the same time, I'm no war monger. Isn't it amazing, though, that people aren't even willing to give peace a chance? That sounds cheezy, but we've never tried.

A while back I made a post and mentioned that we should have a department of peace. A department whose sole purpose was to try to avert war. A department that would try every means to keep everyone alive before anyone is killed. People went crazy at the notion!!!

What's so scary about a peaceful world?

In my silly, uneducated, regular old guy thinking, the military should be a last resort to enforce the peace. Department of DEFENSE....not anything else.

Oh, well, back to reality.

All very nice warm and fuzzy stuff. But the point of Malkin's peace was teaching kids that Amerrican soldiers are murderers and thugs. And that they are in danger from them. These people who feel the need to push these ideas are not trying to be fair. They have hard points of view to push on young minds. It's pure propoganda, and a real slap in the face to military personnel past and present and what America has stood for over the centuries.

This conflict resolution stuff reminds me of the scene in Independence Day where the prez is trying to have a dialogue with the captured alien and asks "what do you want from us" answer" we want you to die". That's about where we are right now in the conflict resolution area.

Oh, don't get me wrong...I don't agree with that wench. I've a few four and five-letter words for her. Like I said, school isn't the place to push that crap. However, neither is praise of the 'nobility' of war.

I don't know about that one...I'm proud to have served, and hearing about people thinking in ways that I completely disagree with make me happy!! That's why I wore the uniform!!

The KKK is a sick, twisted organization. However, as long as they stay within the boundaries of the law, I'd put my life on the line defending their right to think whatever they want about me. That's something worth fighting for.
