Blood Pressure

"Anything else I can do to get this thing under control"

Stop surfing JC and spend more time listening to classical music. I think it would work for me, just not sure it's worth it.

My BP usually borders on the high side. Due to many contributing factors that I am addressing now. But in the past I have found that taking some St. Johns Wort prior to the exam will bring the BP down about 10/10.

Mine would be in the 130/88 range but after St Johns Wort it would drop to 118/78.

I have white-coat hypertension and I failed my medical at AMR because of it. I went home and my readings were off the charts with my physician. She gave me a prescription and told me to buy a home kit.

I got the prescription filled and got the home kit. At home, I checked it and it was normal. I went back to the doc the next day and we compared my machine with hers, and they matched. She told me not to take the pills because Id pass out from LOW blood pressure.

Long story short, I kept a record for three days and turned it into my doc who faxed it to AMR. Im in training now...I heard that personal records work with the FAA as well. Check with your AME.

My BP tends to be a little high. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that my dad and grandmother have high BP and me being a fata$$. So everytime I go in to get my medical, I'm always "excited" to see if my BP went down from last time...and of course it hasn't. However, this past time, the nurse took my BP three times and it was still high. The doc took it and it was a little high. He told me he had to go look up what was acceptable for the FAA and didn't come back for 45 minutes. By the time he got back, I was so pissed off it was higher than before. With the exception of the past 2 weeks, I've been doing a pretty good job of exercising...now if I could just find a way to eat healthy when I'm on the road...that's the toughest part!

Back on the blood pressure subject. Is issuance of a First Class Medical allowed if you are taking medication for Hypertension, if your pressure remains normal while on that medication?

Thanks

Yes, I issued one yesterday. The first time you have a flight physical after the diagnosis of hypertension, you will need to provide the AME some information and documentation to submit to the FAA. The AME can issue the certificate but must send the info to them. Subsequent physicals require you provide the AME some information or if he/she is comfortable with knowing your history and blood pressure control, they can document that in block 60 on the 8500-8 and issue the medical certificate.
