Man... I had his posts blocked for a few weeks until he got rid of it. It was just too disturbing to look at.

Just got a call from my HR rep about 5 minutes ago. There's some sort of big meeting coming up in the next couple of days (before Christmas) and the hiring numbers are being cut way back. I already got my FOL for January 20th, but that is in doubt now. Not sure what I'm supposed to do as I've already started making preparations.

so...anyone know how the meeting went?

maybe there will be news, and they will call people in a timely manner...since it's the first workday after this 'big meeting'

anybody hear anything?

Some people got some bad news, others got some good news. The good news is that the January 20th enroute basics class is still on. The bad news is that not everyone that was originally given an FOL for that class are in it. Many were told that they'd have to wait until next fiscal year (october 2010) at the earliest. Rumor has it that there is only one more enroute basics class (march) this fiscal year. That's just a rumor though.

I lucked out and am still heading to OKC. Works out nicely for me since all of my clearances would have expired if I had to wait until next fiscal year again. I've already been through the "not until next fiscal year" thing once anyhow. Oh well, this process is bonkers.

Is it me, or does it seem like all these big delays and cancellations are mostly for the enroute people. That would make sense to me, since I can't see there being the huge backlog of people for training at smaller terminal facilities that there is at the centers.

Anyone know about class cuts for terminal basics?

Talk's just been about the En Route so far, yeah. I'm not so sure that's positive for the Terminal guys too; they're spread out more, sure, but Centers have specialized training programs meant to take in a lot more people at once.

For what it's worth, here's the En Route Basics schedule as it appears on the FAA's website. There are sixteen classes left to start in the fiscal year, three of which are shown as canceled. Schedule hasn't changed for over a month now. Draw you own conclusions... maybe changes haven't been put into the system yet, maybe they're still up in the air about cuts, maybe they're not as bad as people've been expecting.

Our process has been FUBARed just as bad. The problem I'm having is that even though there were no slots for FY2010 at my facility, they still took on a new guy... only because he washed out of a higher level facility in the area (that was already overstaffed, so I can't get a redirect there). So there goes one of the training slots for my facility-- potentially one that could have been available for the next FY. We're suffering just as bad, and there have been class cancellations with more to come, from what I've been told by a friend of mine at the Academy.

I have the lucky advantage of a father who's a retired controller and who is currently training new people at DFW TRACON. My husband and I went in for a tour and to meet with the training manager, who had emailed his contact on the selection board for the central region to give him my husband's name. The email response said, basically, he would keep an eye out for his name to come up, but since he was in PUBNAT8 instead of 7, things weren't good. According to him, they're still working through the list of veterans, and the slots have been filled through 2011. He said since we're in 8, his name probably won't even be looked at until late this year, at very best, since they still have to get through the stack of PUBNAT7's well-qualified applicants. (We're equally fortunate that he scored WQ. Sounds as though they're not even looking at Qs anymore.)

The training manager also told us that, at least in the central region, they're going to try to stop taking guys straight out of the academy and putting them in big facilities like DFW. The plan is to over-staff some of the smaller facilities, get the guys some experience, and then reward the ones who do well by bringing them over to the larger facilities once they have the skills. They're hoping to avoid having so many wash-outs that way.

My husband right now is considering signing up for 4 years in the Air Force as a controller to get the training and experience, and then reapply with a veterans preference and hope things have smoothed out a bit with the process at that point. At that point, controllers who went in the same time my dad did (post-strike) will be forced to retire and maybe there will be another push to hire. Plus, it sounds like we likely won't hear much for a few years no matter what.

Anyway... I felt like I learned a lot by talking to the training manager, so I just wanted to pass it along, for what it's worth. :dunno:
