bidding?

I have always wondered but never was able to figure it out.
In airlines why do pilots bid on a flight?
From what I was told if a pilot bids on a flight no other pilot can then bid that position and it basically reserved for the bidder.

Is this how you determine where you fly every month?

Thanks in advance i know JC is the place to ask!

Anyone that is eligible to bid may bid on a flight that they are eligible to bid for. The "award" is what is given to the most senior pilot bidding. The most senior pilot gets awarded their first choice, if available (some people come up with stuff the company just can't do). The further down in seniority you go, the less flights and days off are available.

Normal bidding is by the month. You bid for a monthly schedule. they award by seniority and you get your top bid that has not already been awarded to a more senior pilot.
The other type of bidding is for open (unassigned) trips/flights. Trips come open from pilots taking vacation, training, becoming sick, etc and then pilots can bid for these trips, again in a seniority order (exception: some airlines are first come/first serve on open assignments).

Since I'm in cruise on my laptop right now, I've got some time to explain this. :D

I'm going to keep this very simple:

1. Seniority is king. If you are number 1 in category (aircraft type, seat, and base), you will get your exact preferences as long as they fall under the parameters outlined by the program for award- like respecting FAR flight time limits, minimum separation length in between ULR flights, as well as threshold credit limits (high and low) for a line to be built. All those are known, so if you don't get what you want... you have no one but yourself to blame.

2. If no one senior to you has asked for what you want, you typically get it (there are a few exceptions, but that's not worth clouding your mind with). If someone has gotten it, then the system goes into "denial" mode and will try to honor as many of your requests that it can.

2. The more senior you are, the more selective you can be. You can pick out specific trips that start out on specific days that you want, for example.

3. As you get more junior, you have to start just asking for certain sign in and sign out times, asking to not work certain days, asking for layovers in particular cities that you like, and avoiding redeyes (a very popular one for some reason ;) ).

4. When you get down to my "juniority" (I'm 5 from the bottom in my current category), it gets back to being very simple! My bid simply consists of asking for 1. whatever dates I require off, then 2. Sundays off, then 3. Saturdays off. Sometimes I don't know what I would do with myself if I actually had seniority to hold things I wanted!

Whoops, there goes ATL. Back later.
