Bidding system and senior pilots

When bidding for routes and schedules, do Captains and more senior pilots get their first choice of days off? And are they almost guranteed? (especially for Captains).

Captains aren't necessarily senior in their seat. They are more senior, overall, than F/O's but you could be a junior Capt and still get bad schedules.

I'm about 840 out of 2500 guys at UPS. I could be a fairly junior Capt or a super senior F/O. In my ONT base, I'd be about 75 out of 120 as a Captain and am 5 out of 120 as an F/O.

The more senior you are, the more control you have over your schedules. At UPS, they are pretty much gonna get their 12 days out of 28 out of you one way or another. The game is to try to fly easy trips and layover at, or near, your home. As far as certain days off. Guys will often bid a certain schedule to get an important date off.

My schedule is set in stone until Nov 7th. The new bids come out a week from friday and then I'll know a couple of months beyond that.

At some airlines you can dump your whole schedule and rebuild it with trips that aren't covered. You can trade a trip with open time or you can trade with another crewmember. What would be really nice would to be able to drop trips and not get paid for them once in a while, too. I know we can't do that but I've heard some airlines allow it.
