A CFI who is not required to act as PIC may instruct and get paid for it with no medical certificate. A CFI who is required to act as PIC may instruct and get paid for it with only a third class medical certificate.

Again, back to my rhetorical question, why then require a commercial certificate in order to get/hold any of the CFI certificates?
