Best Simulator for IFR

Ok so I'm looking into doing more home computer flying to keep the IFR skillz up. I'm wondering if anyone has Ontop or X-Plane or something else that i haven't heard of. I currently have both Microsoft Flight Sim 2004 and X but Ontop looks to be more realistic. Your thoughts?

:yeahthat: IP trainer and On top saved me a ton of money. I had things mostly figured out before the prop even started spinning. I had only 17 hours of instruction received in the air for my IR, then only another three in the air for the CFII. Because I spent a lot of time learning what I was going to do before I tried to do it.

Seriously it only costs 1 flight hour but saves dozens.

What did you use for a yoke?
 
Saitek has a new yoke coming out next month that looks much better than the CH setup, and you can gang two throttle quadrants together if you want to simulate a twin, or a 747, B-52 or anything else requiring a fistful of power levers. It even comes with swappable knobs.

Uhhh it says 150.00 on the ASA site... what is wrong with microsoft flight sim...fs9 is much cheaper and is just as effective in my opinion...helped me get my instrument...tried OnTop a few times, but never really liked it...btw got my FS copy for 25 buxx... Sorry man not convinced...
 
I think i'm just going stick with microsoft flight simulator X and i'm probably going to grab that yoke setup from Saitek. Looks like quality materials.

In FSX the C172 has a button on it to enlarge the panel for IFR flying. Works perfect for practicing IFR. Not sure if the IFR button is on other planes, but if your are just polishing your IFR skills it really doesent matter that its a 172.
 
Just purchased On Top and find it is really helpful. Only prob is I purchased a joy stick and that does not seem to be working out too well as it is ridiculously sensitive-thinks it's more for video games. Will change that, otherwise find the whole program to be really good - gives lots of training options/scenarios.

Thats why I like On Top, its sensitive, but not so wrapped up in the purported "realism" of MSFS. That and I didn't have to go out and buy a new video card just to run it.
