Ah... always called it the barbie jet more b/c of it being regarded as a "toy" than anything. The DC-9-10 was the original barbie jet...so the story goes.

Nah- still no pay during training. Thatll come with next contract, as will a good increase in FO pay. Negotiations have started early for it...hopefully things will continue to go well.

Off the street captains? No way. Not going to happen. Besides- if you did do that, youd be on reserve for the next eternity. I live with one of the off the street captains...he's been on reserve for the past 3 years..finally has the seniority to hold a line in July. Union wasnt too happy about that in the first place....it wont happen again.

They call the F-100 a barbie jet too.

Street captains are bad news anyway. We had one during my tenure at Skyway and they kept having to pair him with strong FO's else he'd end up wrecking something.

"Oh yeah, in the Beech Baron, it would like..."

"Err, this isn't a Baron, stop experimenting with the condition levers please" (followed by silent profane thoughts)

Doug, what do you think of someone who has already been a captain in that aircraft coming in as a captain?

Probably similar results with similar stories about how it was done somewhere else. IMO, they should get in line like the rest.

If it's strictly training department only, I don't have a problem with it.

But when airlines hire street captains to abrogate seniority and put them in as a regular line pilot, it's bad news for the rest of the line pilots.

Kind of like SWA hiring a new pilot, but then putting him immediately in the left seat because he was a 737 captain at Delta, or Alaska.

I'm not sure what "abrogate" means - have to look that one up!

Why couldn't you just use "nullify?"

It doesn't nullify seniority in the pinnacle instance, though. It just means the captain will be junior forever, watching hundreds of FOs upgrade when they meet the time requirements and push them down further.

Has pinnacle really hired that many low timer that it has no qualified capt upgrades? Just wondering JT why you say most of the time you would never go back to line flying, but your willing to be a street capt.

Actually I'm not sure I'm willing at all. I guess I would just like to know I have the option. Right now I'm having a great time, but who knows what tomorrow will bring?

And don't forget, Pinnacle has hired a bunch of Gulfstreamers lately, low time pilots - probably 600 hrs.

Figure that most insurance companies want at least 2500 hrs for PIC of a jet and you can see where that is going.

I personally heard the Cheif Pilot say he would quit before he hired street captains again. It was a disaster last time around. I doubt it will happen.

Probably something like "get around" or "nullify" or something similar. Perhaps I'm using the wrong word, but being a person that was stepped over for upgrade because my chief pilot (at a previous airline) decided to hire one of his buddies that didn't want to, and I quote, "deal with new hire pay" as a street captain cost me time, money and pilot-in-command time.

Are you talking about the Pinnacle Chief Pilot? or for another airline?

I know you aren't flying a Shorts for Pinnacle.

I'm curious as to where you heard this. First of all, I spoke to the chief pilot when I interviewed in Aug 01. He said this was a new idea for them.

The four of us that were hired as street captains never got a class date, so how could it have gone bad?

If it was a disaster, it's because it didn't happen, as far as I know.

By the way, great line about the Load in the Shorts. I tried that going from San Juan to St. Croix one day - the controller was a young lady that I knew (Anna) and she wasn't amused. Vectored me north of St. Thomas - long flight!

That aint right. The only time I have seen street captains justifiable is when the FOs in question need six months or more to make the minimums. And I've never seen the union disagree with this.

Wasn't Skyway Union? What union allowed this?

We had a guy "sneak in" through training at Mesa. He came in as a training captain and was put on the sen list, and somehow found his way out on the line flying as a captain. He received such a huge ration of brown smelly stuff from the other pilots that he evenetually went back to training.

Training also once offered a type rating because they were so short of sim instructors. The union agreed to type only - not to IOE and line flying. Nobody took the offer, so they came back and offered IOE and displacement flying only, which the union barely agreed to.

As you can expect, many guys took the type, IOE and instructed for a month or so and then bid back to the line AS CAPTAINS.

Great grievance starter there, huh?

I think he worked for Pinnacle at some point.

03M worked with Pinnacle last year and early this year.

Off the street captains is just a baaad baaad idea. Those guys are still sitting reserve. Will finally get a line in July.
The union will poop a brick if they try it again, nor does anyone want to try it again except for bean counters with no foresight. Theres been mention of lowering our captain minimums from 3000 hours down a tad.

I'm about 11 months away from making those minimums. I believe theres about 200 Gulfstream pukes+ out there... They will definitely help keep the FO ranks filled.

Peanuckle do some checking for me?

I don't think any street captains were hired.

I was supposed to be in that group and our classes were postponed (and later cancelled) due to 9-11.

There might have been a class earlier, I don't know.

And as far as reserve, well yes, it was made clear that reserve would last 2-3 years.

Word is that street captains will happen happen again there. I have heard through a couple different sources that they will have to hire captains again because they will run short of FOs w/ 3000TT.

Personally I think 3000TT is a perfectly resonable requirement to expect for a CRJ captain.

Happen AGAIN? My question is have they happened ONCE. I don't think so.

The four of us who were chosen (but not hired) were all in excess of 6500 TT
