Best place to fly!

Good day mates,

So I want your opinions on where the best places to fly.

Texas, California, Arizona, Michigan?!?!?

I've flown through all of them and they're all great in their own way.

What kind of flying do you want to do? Training?

I've only flown through Southern California, but I have to say there's not a whole lot prettier than SoCal by air on a clear day with no haze. Too bad that's a very rare occurrence.

I would imagine Alaka would be the most scenic. :pirate:

Coastal CA you'll definitely get real IMC. If you're looking for good realiable weather AZ and TX definitely the way to go. Although for TX you better like flat.

I've flown in all those areas except Michegan.

I like Chicago. Florida is great too. It's crazy how quiet southern Indiana and Kentucky are when talking to center. Depends on what you like though. Are we talking ease, price, or how fun it is?

I've done a lot of flying in WI, MI, the Delmarva Peninsula, and TX and TX and Delmarva were the most fun. My flying out east was pre-911, though. I would say TX is fun if you like picking airports off a map and barnstorming. There are a lot of really cool airports down there. WI is fun if you like scenery and beer.

Good! Michigan is the devil! :pirate:

Regarding flying there, though, I'd imagine it would be much like Ohio. You'd get a wide variety of weather patterns to experience, but at the same point in time, you'll get limited in flyable days, particularly in winter. If you decide to fly in that area through a 141 or university program, you might be even worse off due to more stringent scheduling demands than a part 61 joint. The nice thing, is that at least in Ohio, if you toss a rock, it'll pass through the pattern of 4 or 5 other airports. You have a bunch of options for places to explore!

Colorado: TONS of class G, no humidity, 300 days of sunshine per year, great views along the front range...and it only snows at night. ;)

Well, flying in MI during the winter months can be pretty gruesome. There is a lot of down time due to weather and icing conditions. It is doable, but your training might take a bit longer.

Interesting airports to visit, good weather, cheap flight training, and air traffic tame enough so you don't think you're gonna die at any moment like here in South FL. Anywhere like that?

I started my IR in southern california and finished in northern california, and I must say, aside from the cost of living, northern california was a great place to fly. Lots of airports, a variety of airspace within a short distance, mountains, flatlands, coast, lots of IMC, and class G just a short hop over here in NV! Flight training in the bay area can be pricey, but in sacramento it was suprisingly affordable. If you are planning on starting this soon though, be prepared for lots of foggy days and ground training in the winter, when it can get socked in.

Well, I must've been there on the other 65 days of the year, because the weather was always changing, and it definitely snowed during the day!!:bandit:

I agree with all of the above. I did a lot of my training in NorCal out of SAC. I've also done some training in North Dakota and Las Vegas, but wouldn't recommend those places.

Good day mates,

Texas, California, Arizona, Michigan?!?!?

I would stay clear of Michigan or Texas. In the summer texas has a lot of thunderstorms, in the winter Michigan has below freezing temps.

I am doing my training in the midwest and it is a horrible place to fly. Fall - forget about it, most days are overcast/cloudy with clouds in the air at freezing level. Winter - even worse.

You're best bet is definitely Cali. From what I hear about AZ is that winds are usually calm and no IMC so not the best play to learn how to fly.

However, go where you will get the cheapest rates :)

Umm... Not like Florida... Depends where in TX... Houston, maybe--but not really Dallas.

North Texas isn't bad at all in the summer. I did all my training in southern OK/north TX.
