Running JC for over a decade and 50,000-plus posts, I think I've made plenty of statements and I am absolutely stand firmly that we need to stop turning on other pilots for revenue streams in a time of a deep industry crisis.
Most of the guys that I know that frequent the jobs section of our forum are laid-off or furloughed. I couldn't imagine saying "Hey, I know you're out of a job, but give me some money and maybe I can help you find employment. And if you sign up for 90 days, you'll save over 20% over other aviation job sites, ACT NOW while supplies last!"
Ehh... That's not how I roll.
Keep in mind I started Jetcareers during the day when if you had a question about an issue like airline scheduling, your only alternatives were to as a guy at your guard unit (if you were military) or plunk down $100's of dollars for the Air Inc/Kit Darby/FAPA products.
I met Darby and asked him a question about age limits in the OCS and he kindly offered to give me a discount on his book. He couldn't simply say "Hey, you're under the maximum age to start UPT if selected", I was directed to plunk down $30 for a book with all the answers about careers in military aviation.
Hell, I was a starving CFI, and that was going to cost almost three hours of dual given and a little shocking because I was one of those guys that lived on Taco Bell's 49-cent bean burritos, much to my students chagrin.
There is absolutely no way in hell I'd charge a pilot looking for employment because would I be any better than Kit Darby that day when he suggested I buy his book instead of just saying "as long as you're not 27 yet" (or whatever it was at the time) and then I probably would have been motivated to buy the book at a later date once I had the money.
If we, as professional aviators, focus on helping one another attain our career goals we're going to be eventually be able to rebuild the industry into a profession that when our kids say "Daddy, I want to be a pilot like you", we can be proudly supportive - rather than "You're crazy. Go to medical school, then buy an airplane."
Many of my users I've met face-to-face, drank beer with, work(ed) with, visited in foreign countries or are on my speed dial on my telephone. The concept of having a monthly "cover charge" to find help is terrible.
Besides, I'm hoping that the guy I was able to help today, might be in a position to help me down the road.
