Ok. REAL pilot who worked on the movies as a pilot.

Paul Mantz

He was killed during the filming of Flight of the Phoenix. I didn’t know this until now, but some of his pallbearers were Jimmy Stewart, Jimmy Doolittle (is he on the list?), John Ford, and Chuck Yeager.

If you ever get the chance, read Hollywood Pilot. Check out his IMDB credits — he flew some of the most memorable flying scenes of his day (iirc, besides the Phoenix, he crash landed the B17 with one gear up in 12 o’clock High). And this doesn’t touch his imvolvement with the air races.
