Best headsets?

I'm about to start my pilot training and was wanting some opinions on the many headsets. I read a thread but it was mainly bashing bose. Which I was thinking about getting. My wife has some of the headphones and they're pretty nice and quiet. Thanks for your opinions.

There is NO headset, in my opinion that can compare to the Bose. It's the most expensive because it is the best, hands down.

The only headset that even gives Bose a run is the Lightspeed 33-G.

DC's ANR is pitiful. In my opinion.

Everyone is going to have a different opinion on headsets. In my experience the DC13X is quieter and a heck of a lot more durable than that overpriced Bose....and at half the price I thnink the choice is pretty easy. My DC's have taken a beating...slammed in airplane doors, dropped, stepped on, sat on, rained on etc... their still good as new. I've seen 2 Bose's get broken in the last 6 months.

I'd talk myself into thinking the Bose was the best too if I spent that much money.

Heres my advice: first dont ask people what theyre favorite headset is, everyones favorite is their own! Just go to a pilot shop and try some on for yourself. Try to get the one that is the most comfortable. By the way,

I prefer my Telex 4105 ANR!

Best advice....ever.

Everyone's head is different, everyone's ears are different, therefore everyone is going to have a different favorite headset. Me personally, I love my DCs.I think the Bose headsets are not worth an extra $500-600 for what you get. Lightspeeds are good headsets, but not for me. They crush my head and my ears, which is what some people say about my DCs. I've worn the DCs for a 5 hour flight, and I felt just fine afterwards. Headsets are as personal a choice as a car or clothing.

Now, how long before we get into the DC and Lightspeed customer service debate? Seems like everytime this same thread gets started, it ends the same way.

Bose = Overpriced

And that is a known fact among audiophiles like me.

I probably have a very biased opinion towards Bose because I first knew them in the home theatre/home audio world. Bose uses tactful marketing to get people to say "Bose is the best" because one other person says "OOOO AAAAH, my new Audi has a Bose system!"

I can go on and on about why Bose is not good for any home theatre/home audio set up...but I will leave you to read this article if you've got the time:
http://liquidtheater.com/editorial_56.html

If you want any idea of Bose's quality, did you know that their bass module woofers and headphone drivers are made in Mexico??????? It's not advertised, but it's very well known among the audio enthusiast world.

...that is why I do not touch Bose and their overpriced products.

Try Sennheiser or David Clark headsets. I have the H10-13.4's and they've lasted a long time so far.

Telex 50-D is hands down, the quietest. Pretty comfy too. The Bose is a lighter if it fits you, but no where near as quiet. I wear the 50-D on a regular basis. Added benifit is the anr works on batteries, or just plug into the cig lighter in 99% of the planes you'll fly. The passive only noise reduction is about as quiet as the rest of the anr stuff on the market. And to top it all off, it doesn't act like a vice clamp on your head for that noise reduction.

if you are looking at dropping $1000 on the bose, do yourself a favor and try the top of the line (and the level below the top) ANR headsets from all the major companies (you'll find other brands top out around the $500-700 range). That's what I did for hours in each, and the decision is then very easy to make.

I've current students with the Bose, and the DC, and Lightspeed models. All the high end stuff. Love to do the swap test with them. Makes a sad look on their face though, every time, when they realize how quiet things can be. If you are willing to spend a lot, go for the best, not just the most expensive, or the one that is the most common color.

I thought the same thing

On topic, I love my DC 13.4 They are comfy and good quality.

I was at OSH over the weekend and tried the Bose and the Telex Stratus 50-D and the 50-D was better in both active and passive noise reduction. They also placed both headsets in a sound box that tested for noise reduction between 70 to 100 Hz and the 50-D's were better hands down.

My friend who went to OSH with the intention of buying the Bose ended up buying two 50-D's for a Airventure special at $500 a piece. I wore one of them on the three hour flight home and while the noise reduction was great, I thought the pinching force (even though set to light tension) was way too tight and that they were less comfortable than my DC13.4's.

As everyone has mentioned...Of course the ones we own are going to be our favorite!

There are a couple of things I considered when I was getting ready to buy headsets. The first was: How much and how long am I going to use these? and the Second was is ANR worth the $$$? It is so worth it! If you plan on flying very often I would really go with something with ANR. Most sets have a decent warrenty, should anything happen. I love lightspeed (they seem to have a good product for a good price) Good Luck!!!

haha! thanks...I figure (when I get there and for everyone there) somethings got to beef up the pension!!!!

Bose has been the best headsets I owned so far. They really do a great job. The only bothersome thing with it is that I have to turn the radios down because the transmissions are too loud for me, even with the headset volume all the way down. I would buy them again anyday.

Everyone talks about ANR, but ENR is the way to go I think. I have the H-20-10XLs...or is it 10-20? I dont know...Anyway it is one of the top DC headsets. What is great about them besides the feel, etc. is that there is a battery pack for electronic noise reduction (ENR). When not in use or turned off, the headsets revert to ANR. However ENR seems to dampen the noise much better than just built in ANR. It is amazing to hear the difference. Once you click on the switch you hear it get quieter, and hearing/communications become waaay more crisp.

ENR, ANR, ENC, etc., are all the same thing. Different companies refer to it different ways.

I think you're referring to passive noise reduction. If you turn the battery pack off, the ANR goes away.

Oh, I was unaware they were the same. And I checked the website, just to make sure.

"NRR - 22 dB passive noise reduction plus 17 dB to 22 dB when ENC is turned on. "

Thanks for the correction though. Now I wont say it to someone else and sound dumb.
