Best G1000 Training Material

To those who instruct G1000-equipped aircraft regularly,

What do you find to be the best training material out there for teaching students the ins and outs of the G1000?

Is Max Trescott's book any good?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks.

A PC simulator and some good one on one time with the student.

The Trescott books is very good. The G1000 user manual that you can get online for free isn't too bad, but very mechanical and boring.

The G1000 simulator from Garmin is pretty good. Ultimately, it would be great to get students out to the plane and sit there with external power o. A bumpy, hot, noisy airplane is a hard place to teach people how to use all those little knobs and buttons. If they have a chance to play with them on the ground, that'd be a huge advantage.

Trescott's book is excellent, subject to the limitiations that all books have for teaching physical skills, expecially for some people.

I have the Trescott book & like it.

Coming from one who had to learn the G1000 by doing, the best thing you can do for your students is have them turn the knobs & push the buttons rather than doing it for them. It makes it a lot easier to remember.

Thanks to a (I think) well meaning CFI I had when learning the system, I'm having to re-learn the monkey-fighting MFD because the only functions I got to learn as a student were the lean-assist button, and the reversionary mode button. I thought all the MFD was was a moving map & engine gauges.

Thanks for all the responses.

I'm a new CFI-I, and I will probably be doing a lot of flying in G-1000 equipped airplanes. I think the company-provided ops manuals for many gps systems are great, but can be a little dull at times.

I really think the books are a waste of money and after a few flights it will just sit on a bookshelf. Check out the Users Manual and practice with the PC or in the aircraft with an external power source to get aquainted, and then just fly. It really is pretty intuitive. You'll figure things out pretty quick, especially if you have Garmin, or any GPS/PFD/MFD experience.
