Best/Essential Books for IR

I've got his Instrument Flying Handbook, and I haven't found that to be the case at all. Everything is covered in detail from the beginning.

+1 for Machado's Instrument Flying Handbook. Corny as his humor is, it's a nice break from the dryness of the FAA pubs. Those are essential too, though.

What I like about Machado's books is that he often uses analogies to clear up concepts. So if I'm stuck on something in an FAA pub (especially weather stuff) or things about NDBs (which are just starting to sort of make sense) he tends to get me through the gate, so to speak.
