Best ear plugs in noisy planes

(ANR headset not an option). Does anyone use ear plugs under their headset? I have just been using disposable ones and those have been fine. In fact I think they have a pretty decent noise reduction rating. Just was seeing if there are any reusable options that are worth a shot, without spending $100 at an audiologist, although I'd consider that too. Maybe musician ear plugs?
 
In my experience, the cheap foam earplugs you're using work far better than the molded fancy ones you get from an audiologist. The foam ones stay sealed when you turn your head. You won't get the same performance out of custom molded ones unless you go extremely expensive and high end... I prefer the Howard Leight Max earplugs....
 
I have the exact opposite opinion of @launchpad . I spent $60? I think for custom ear plugs. I use them on the gun range too. They're excellent.

I also use custom CEP's under my helicopter helmet. There is a noticeable difference between the custom molded and foam inserts.
(CEP's are ear plugs with audio capability. It's an extra layer of hearing protection. Not sure if there is a civilian application, but I digress)
 
My experience in a loud unpressurized turbo prop and the Pitts has been the Bose A20s. I've tried generic foam ear plugs under my Bose while flying the Pitts, an overall reduction in decibels but not great, the intercom and radio become muffled.
