Best BBQ, etc. in Texas

A few weeks ago, there was some argument for BBQ supremacy in Texas with the two top contenders being Hard 8 and Coopers.

With our trip a few days ago, Ortini and I have decided that Hard 8 won the duel. I'm still partial towards Llano's jalepeno sausage, but the sirloin at Hard 8 was probably the best meat I've ever had. Apparently the "half chicken" was great too, but Ortini ate it all before I could try any.

What other BBQ or other restaurants are good for XC trips in Texas? Any other XC recomendations (any distance)?

The Salt Lick, outside the southwest area of Austin is pretty damned good.

god i hate you guys, making me miss texas again!

I know it's so far out of the way and you have to go to Longview or Shreveport to get there but my hometown has one of the best BBQ sandwiches ever put together. Very incognito but well worth the trip. Neely's Brown Pig -- Marshall, TX

Also, for out of state...Olathe, KS -- Oklahoma Joe's BBQ -- KOJC

There's a decent burger joint right up the road from the Sherman Muni. airport. Go north on S. Dewey Ave. to the intersection of Dewey and E. Lamar. If you stop by, punch the IA on the field and tell him he missed a heck of a deal on an Ercoupe that I took out to him about 8 months ago.

Not anywhere near the field, but OKC has the stockyards for some great beef (steaks, etc.). Not sure how far it is from city airport, if it is even still open.

Hard 8 wins flat out just because they have free beer. Hang out there all day, then go down the street to city limits for a bad ass concert.

Watch out for those Tarleton girls.

Anything ever hapen with the Trinity girl?

I can't believe she didn't know me...I'm famous out here man.

Try Vitek's in Waco. Ask for the "Gut Pack". It's like a big, high-performance Frito pie that weighs about 4 pounds! Fritos, chipped beef, chedder cheese, homemade beans, their signature sauce, a few jalapenos for kicks, etc. Killer. It's a staple for us Bears!

The Hard 8 and Coopers are the best in Texas, to be sure, but trying to figure out which is best is like trying to figure out whether dry ribs or wet are better: Coopers uses a tangy vinegar based sauce, and Hard 8 uses tomato-brown sygar style. It's all in what you like.

I give them both a tie because sometimes I crave one style, and sometimes I crave another. However, I have to say: the girls working at Hard 8 trump Coopers for scenery.

Blasphemy, Shiner!! God fearin' cornpone shoudn't have anything in it 'ceppin cornmeal, flour, shortnin', lev'nin, eggs and buddamilk. Jalapenos! Fie! Corn niblet chunks! Begone!!

Then again, I've never had the kind in Abeline, and you're like, the third guy to say somthing about it, so maybe I'll change my tune when I try it.

Holy crap Hard 8 that night was freakin awesome! I thought Coopers was the bbq I had ever had. Nope Hard 8 killed it! And CapnJim is right, the scenery is much better!

Hey, TFaudree_ERAU doesnt Sherman Muni. have gas for like $2.65?

Just asking because when planning our flights Mike and I base where we are going to go on good BBQ and cheap gas. Since thats pretty much all we pay for.
Anyone down to have a fly-in and get some Q at Hard 8 just let us know. We'll be there! And anyone from Austin want to ride along, just holla!

Fly4Pay -

It's actually just over the border on the TX side. In the quiet little town of Marshall. Home of the World's Largest Outdoor dislay of Christmas lights and the fireant festival. Good times. Neely's rules. Has anybody out there ever flown into Sikeston, MO? I love Lambert's Cafe.
