Best and Worst Airlines

Is it the regional guys or just the new generation? I've seen this behavior EVERYWHERE, not just at regional airlines.

Airlines shouldn't HAVE to have a class or spend extra time on telling someone how to dress or act professionally. IMO, if that person doesn't follow through during their probationary period and act according to their position, they should be cut loose. Unfortunately, management doesn't really care unless it starts impacting the bottom line.

You know, Boyd's part of my monday morning ritual.

Then about 10 minutes after reading his missive, there was a gentleman on CNN that spoke of exactly what Boyd said to look out for.

"The hub and spoke system is broken!"

Yeah, but methinks no one is going to fly me from Prescott, AZ to JFK nonstop! :)

I myself take a lot of pride in what I do. The basics sometimes seem like going above and beyond. but it really isn't. Like shaving everyday, having a neatly pressed shirt, pants, and tie. Wearing your hat and coat(weather permissible) while walking thru the terminal or in front of passengers. Not looking like you ate the enter buffett the day before at sizzler(no I don't go there, nor have I since I was 7...lol).

I understand that sometimes its 100 degrees outside, and the hat and sport coat get axed, but the things I see around the ramp sometimes is ridic.

I once had a flight attendant throw on a sean john fleece over his uniform while still on the plane at an outstation. Then his backpack over that. Then we walked thru the terminal past all the pax that were waiting for their bags. If you don't see something wrong with that, you need to re-think what professionalism is.(and by you, I don't mean you max, just speaking in general terms lol).

I was with you until I read this part. I am fat, but my uniform is neatly pressed. I shave everyday, and take pride in wearing my uniform. Being fat does not make you unprofessional, or less skilled. I have flown with some thin people who shouldn't be flying anything. If people snear at me as I walk through the terminal to get to my jet, that is fine. I just smile at the end of the day as I enter the day's total multi/turbine flight time in my logbook.

Lack of professionalism/decorum breeds mediocrity...and mediocrity causes problems. You don't need any problems with your crew.

I feel the same way, in that, its our responsibility to pull her aside and say something. But at a certain Utah based airline, retaliation is rampant. With no protection, you run the risk of being called into the chief's office to be lashed at because someone who knows the right higher up, didnt like what you had to say. Regardless of whether you were right or wrong.

Sorry- I didn't mean it as a fat person remark. I guess I just put it wrong. But I've flown with some of these guys/gals who gulp down these crew meals all day long, and all thats gonna lead to is a heart attack in 10 years. I know its tough to eat on the road, but these crew meals are gonna kill us. Once again, I didn't mean it as a fat joke. Sorry if it came across that way.

It's cool man, no need to apologize and I really wasn't offended. I do agree that we eat horribly though, I know I do. I hear it soooo much when people say that being fat is unprofessional. It can be if you are fat and dress like a slob, I try to be and look as neat as a fat guy possibly could. You sound like a good guy, so no need to apologize.
 
I'll tell you something about being fat, It is human nature to look at fat people and think they are not professional because they don't take care of themselves. You ARE discriminated against, especially by anyone who wants to hire you.
I know it all too well, I was able to lose over 250 lbs with diet and exercise, I am now 270 something. The really messed up part is that people are shocked to hear I weigh 270-280, they say I look like I weigh more like 220 or 210. I look at myself and have to constantly remind myself that I weigh under 400lbs much less under 300.
I don't blame people for thinking that way, they are genetically programmed to think that and they can't comprehend it unless they've been there. Survival of the fittest and all that. Well I'm about to start my cross countries for my private pilot, one more semester and off to ATP!

Well, you could be like most of the regionals out there and not get crew meals. Then you'd have to spend $$$ on the food in the airport. There are plenty of days I'd kill to have crew meals instead of attempting to sprint to Subway and make it back without delaying the flight.
 
Crew meals... Hmm. To have or to have not.

We have them if we go more then 6.5 hours with out a 1 hour break in a hub or 45 minute break at an outstation. There are days where I just wish they would give us our 1 hour break. Many many crews have gotten sick due to crew meals. Especially over the summer it is sort of hit or miss.

Try packing your food (seriously). You can eat whenever you are hungry and as a bonus it costs a lot less (important for poor regional pilots).

That's where you're wrong, Kell. I love ya like a brother, bu behavior is taught. Even if it is a problem with a whole generation.

U.S. Marines don't go to recruit training knowing how to square their uniforms away. It's taught.

If crews are going to be held to a standard, that standard needs to be explained and taught. Otherwise, they're being set up for failure.
 
The crew "meals" are actually snack boxes for first class. Everything is sealed so there's a minimal chance of getting sick from eating them.
 
Will the cooler fit in the planes fridge? That's what we do on the C-5... I just measured the size compartment it would take and bought one accordingly. works great.
