Best airport to access DC Capital area

IAD Isn't that hard to get into and will save you 20 mins or so. Landmark doesn't rape you too bad in fees. FWIW we use them 3 times a week or so.

IAD is about what 30 minutes from Downtown?

JYO is probably cheaper. I would imagine the parking fees at IAD either at Signature or Landmark are much more.

If you want the closest airport to downtown DC WITHOUT traffic, it would be 2W5 (Maryland Airport). Depending on what you are flying it serves as the best airport for this area for access to DC. Longest runway is 3000 feet, but they are building a 4500 foot runway now. There is also of course Manassas or Leesburg, but you will be fighting traffic from I-66 and I-95 depending on when you go.

I fly into both pretty regularly. JYO has never charged me a fee, although I rarely spend more than 30 minutes on their ramp, and we're a Landmark based customer. No getting out of fees at IAD, but they aren't that unreasonable (also at Landmark). If you fly into JYO, add about 15-20 minutes to the drive into DC compared to IAD.

Just ran the numbers, looks like I will have enough to tanker to and from wherever we go, so I won't have to buy a drop of fuel. If IAD is most convenient, thats what it will be. Need a minimum of 4,000 foot runway.

I second Jhugz you can get the metro to downtown pretty easy from GAI. JYO is way out but a nice area with lots of things to do, And IAD to me is to expensive

IAD is probably the cheapest large airport we goto. Seriously compare it to BWI.

Stafford (RMN) can prove to be a contender too. It's uncontrolled, outside the SFRA, and it located right next to I-95. If you arrive there at a decent time, you can get to DC in 30 minutes.

Cost doesn't matter. As long as we have enough runway to get the CJ in (out rather), the boss wants time and convenience to metro area. My preference would be JYO, but it looks like thats farther than we need to be going. It's down to IAD or GAI. I've been to GAI a few times in small planes and seem to remember a ramp with a very steep grade, and nothing larger than Baron's. Is the airport/FBO familiar with overnighting turbojets. I remember not liking their FBO much either.

Isn't there a train just a hop, skip and a jump from the Manassas airport? Oh, and the girl I used to know that worked the FBO, aye chihuahua. Worth it.

JYO will be about an hr drive to downtown and if it's rush hour good luck rt 7 is a cluster from what I remember. If you r looking for a nice facility than jyo should be the winner landmark and projet both on the field

I instructed at JYO for a few years. I got the impression it was bizjet overflow parking for IAD. From the "time to DC perspective", I'd pick IAD over JYO. You'll save yourself 20 minutes on the toll road. Route 7 eastbound is not an option if you're concerned about travel time.

As much as I hate sitting there, GAI I would think is the best bet to get to downtown if you don't want to go to IAD. We go into GAI a lot, I swear I feel like I'm there every other week. The only problem with it is lack of approaches. The RNAV will get you to 300' if you're WAAS able, otherwise you may have trouble if you show up on a low day.

As mentioned I'd probably pick IAD because of the Dulles Access road. This gives you a traffic free ride about half way down to DC. Traffic can absolutely suck in the DC area. I live 83 miles east of IAD and I've had it take anywhere from 1.5 hours to almost 5.

If you go into GAI, do yourself a favor and MEL your TCAS. All the training activity around there scares the crap out of me every time I go.
