I just got hired with a de-icing company here in Anchorage. Which suprised me because I turned in my application yesterday afternoon.:beer:
 
De-icing sucks turds.

That is unless you have one of those fancy deicers with an enclosed cab, not a converted cherry picker that the phone company put out to pasture decades ago that has the guns c-clamped to the safety railing.
 
You guys ever use the stupid super soaker de icer. It's pretty lame, but the idea is pump the little reservoir and it squirts out some on the wing. For cessnas and little stuff.
 
We use it for "defrost" here at UND. Since the Fargo FSDO has hinted that they will enforce a no-polish policy... we've been defrosting all our aircraft for 3 years now.

We used one down at riddle in daytona if you can believe that. I was like.... na-uh, cya!

The FAA has just changed its policy on polished wings and frost.

Nothing can be worse than our so-called de-icer. It's basically a trailer that we tow with the tug and a has a tank mounted on it with a small 5hp engine. The engine runs a pump which pushes the fluid through what is essentially a garden hose and out through the spray gun (looks like a machine gun). On top of the tank is a set of stairs (like you'd find at a Home Depot) and that's how we get to the upper surfaces. I'm usually embarassed everytime I use it.

Oh how I hate being at an outstation that gets all the crap equipment the hubs beat on for 20 years then gave to us. :(
 
Congrats on getting the job.

Our deice cart is pretty bad. One pilot asked if we made it from leftover pieces of a 1960's errector set. It's got a 600 gallon tank on it and a couple of different platforms with the tallest one being around 30 feet up or so.

Pretty sure it was built by the lowest bidder over a weekend and lots of booze were involved to get the job done. Definitely not the safest method out there, but like most places it'll take an accident to get something done about it.
