Be careful who you split time with....

<Hijake> Perpetual:

How do you like flight instructing at northern China? Any good chinese food? :) BTW, I can read you signature in simplified chinese characters.

<End of Hijack>

Alphaone, sorry to hear about your experience. However, whatever did not kil you, it will help you get stronger. ;)

In flight would be the last place to ever want to check this, doing so could possibly cause problems.

No, its okay to check your mags in flight. I've done it before to verify some possible problems. I don't run the engine for extended periods like this but don't be afraid to switch the key around if you feel you need to.

Thank God. It's about time!
Just kidding.....but it will definitely be good to have you.
Are you flying out of Blue Ash Aviation?

Yeah, they have the only arrow in town. I'm going up on Wednesday to get the ball rolling and get an instructor.

Also, to add a positive note to this thread...for every horrible pilot you run across, you'll also find some who are real joys to fly with.

:yeahthat:

I'd put Tim down in that category. Real chill and calm, and just put you at ease.

If you get to fly with him, do it.

Yeah tell me about it! All the airports are quite a distance from Erlanger other than Lunken, but the two schools there don't have a complex a/c.:(

Yeah...the cats who busted the DC ADIZ were apparently some well meaning timebuilder and a douchebag who didn't know how to fly his way out of a wet paper bag. So yeah. Be careful about who you split time with. I think I've had too much wine....

When flying as a safety pilot, I always made it clear I was the PIC only during the time the pilot was wearing a hood--otherwise, they were the acting PIC. If they botched a landing or busted somebody's airspace when they had the hood off, I didn't want to have anything to do with the responsibility.

I agree with this statement, but I'd also like to add that instead of just shedding responsibility, to the best of my ability I wouldn't let anything happen when I was on board behind the controls even if I was just along for the ride. (Besides, what's the FAA going to say if I let a low time pilot screw up while I as a CFI sat there and watched even if I wasn't giving dual?) With a few exceptions, it doesn't bother me to fly with just about anyone because I trust myself. If it were a situation where I don't have the skills or training to fly (e.g. bushflying, turbine planes, seaplanes, etc.), then I would be very choosy who I flew with until I did have the necessary skills/training to know that if someone screwed up I could handle it.

For some reason it hasn't phased me to tell someone when they're messing up, possibly because I'm a CFI, possibly just my nature. If it's a minor screw up, I'll let them do whatever it is and learn, but if it's a potential incident or accident, I'll say something or do something. Heck, I even told the DPE on my multi ride that he was screwing up and flaring too high when he was demonstrating a short-field landing. (This DPE has a tradition of doing the last landing at the end of the ride.)

I guess what I'm saying is that unless you don't trust yourself to stop a bad progression, or unless it's someone who really will fight you 'till the end so to speak, then it's not always a bad thing to fly with people like that. There was probably a time where more experienced pilots I flew with thought I was just a joker young private pilot who needed to learn a few things. You never know what kind of a good example you may be giving and what they may learn from you.

One thing I am worried about slightly, is when I move on to something bigger and am acting as the FO, will I have the ability to sit back and keep my hands off the controls when the Captain does something that I don't feel is quite right.

Hopefully when this happens, I am right, but I would hate to be wrong... Then again I would really hate to be wrong on the other end too. I'll take an awkward remainder of a flight rather than a flight that ends because of a mistake that I could have prevented.

Ah, the age old, "If you were the FO and the Captain did (fill in the blank), what would you do?"

Well, from what I have heard, you only develop the ability to know it is the right time to put the captain in his place once you have over 1000 hrs TT.

999, keep your mouth shut, but after 1000, you can't be wrong :)
